Guess Who’s Coming to Lunch?

Join the Statesman Journal’s new
Executive Editor, Michael Davis,

and hear what he has to say about
Salem,
its newspaper and anything
else that he may want to share.

Friday, May 3, 2013

Michael Davis has only been in town for a couple of months but he already has more observations about our community than most of us have after living here for decades.  An author, teacher, editor, columnist, and television and radio regular in Canada and the United States, Michael Davis describes being a journalist/editor at this time in history as “exciting and most challenging.”

The Salem City Club audience will hear Davis discuss the responsibilities and satisfactions of being a newspaper editor in the digital age.

At the Statesman Journal, he is responsible for a high tech news portal that streams intensely local content to phones, laptops, desktops, tablets and yes, newsprint, which he refers to as the “fifth screen.”  If you don’t understand what that all means, it is even more important that you attend so he can explain it.  Davis has a three-page curriculum vitae, so, in a nutshell:

  • Degrees from the University of North Carolina and Northwestern University. Spent a year at Harvard University as a Nieman Fellow.
  • Journalism positions at 10 different newspapers and magazines including Lafayette Journal and Courier, TV Guide, Baltimore Sun and Evening Sun, Chicago Sun-Times and the Daily News.
  • Author of Street Gang: The Complete History of Sesame Street and The Wild Side of Maryland: An Outdoor Guide.
  • Authored articles in the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Newsday, the Oprah Winfrey Magazine plus many others.

Please join us as we welcome Michael Davis, Executive Editor of the Statesman Journal, on Friday, May 3, 2013.  As is our tradition, we meet at the Willamette Heritage Center at the Mill in the Spinning Room.   For lunch reservations email rsvp@salemcityclub.com before noon Wednesday, May 1, 2013.  Parking is free.  Doors open at 11:30 AM.  For more information on this program please go to www.salemcityclub.com.

FUTURE SCC PROGRAMS

Friday, May 17:  Mid-Valley Mentors, a partner of the Marion County Re-Entry InitiativeMid-Valley Mentors mentors children and adults affected by incarceration.  A panel of speakers will discuss how the mentoring program provides a second chance for prisoners released from  the state prison into Marion County to successfully transition back into society.  This mentoring program and the Re-Entry Initiative have contributed to a significantly reduced the recidivism rate for Marion County, and is a possible model for other counties in the state.  Learn how and why this program succeeds.
