A Word from our Coordinating Committee Chair

By now you will have received notice of our pending AGM, I encourage you all to attend because as well as the very exciting elections of new committee members, we have Mayor Stephen Yarwood speaking on Adelaide City Council sustainability initiatives.

I will not be standing for Chair of the coordinating committee this year, I have had a great time in this role and made some great friends and acquaintances and feel that as a group we are making a positive difference to the world we live in.  I also believe strongly that a group can only remain active and vital if it has new ‘blood’ and ideas, and so encourage any member out there that has some time and interest to put up their hand to help on the committee.  As a committee you can decide how roles and tasks are undertaken so it does not have to be onerous.

Being on a coordinating committee may not be very glamorous but it is important to the continuing success of Sustainable Communities SA so please contact me if you would like to talk about helping out even if you have concerns about time commitments.  See you on the 23rd.

System change, social change, cultural change.....

These phrases represent the processes in which all of us are involuntary and active participants. Many situations seem out of our control, but in fact we can be influential. Whether we visualize “the system” as a whole or in various parts, there are at least four approaches through which we can develop our responses.

  • Learning: eg. change from a human-centred to an ecology-centred mind-set.
  • Imagining: the way we all should live, eg. equality, nurturing, localisation.
  • Living: the way we believe the world should be, eg. conserving non-renewable resources; building community relationships.
  • Preparing: for the uncertain future; becoming resilient.

SCSA has established a working group which is thinking about the challenges and opportunities of system change. We invite everyone to link up either in face to face discussions or by email communications. Contact Ray Mylius - ph  8363 2295 or email.

Community Groups in Our Urban Village are busy with a range of topics and events:

Felixstow hosted an event on Saturday afternoon 6th April when about 50 people met on Linear Park in Felixstow to meet with neighbours and celebrate Neighbours Day. Many people had read about it in the Messenger Press with its campaign about Neighbours Day while others had recieved an invitation through door knocking or letter boxing. New connections were made and people talked to a neighbour they hadn't met before. Grace Portolesi, Our local member, came as did 3 local Councillors. Many issues were raised with them as well as friendly chat. Garden experience and recipes were exchanged.  New people decided to join Sustainable Communities. A lovely afternoon with calls to do it again.

Joslin hosts Essential Edibles on the first Sunday of every month. In April there was an abundance of fruit, vegies, eggs and even some tiny fish shared by about 10 people. The Joslin Community Group has an interesting progamme of meetings for the year.

Hackney-College Park are planning a Flea Market later in the year and continue their monthly meetings while Royston Park-Marden is considering "How we can become more Resilent as individuals, a group and a community when adverse events occur?". The group will screen the film "the Economics of Happiness" and are planning a "Meet your Community" event later in the year.

The One Planet Market continues to be a major focus for Our Urban Village members and groups.

We are seeking nominations from people willing to join the coordinating committee to take up positions of Chair and Treasurer as well as ordinary members.

Our current Chair and Treasurer have indicated their intention to step down. We welcome nominations and enquiries from anyone who would like to take on these roles. While they are important and carry certain responsibilities, they are not unduly burdensome and any support required will be provided by continuing committee members.

Please consider what you can do to help our organisation to continue to grow and thrive.

You can download the nomination form for committee positions and return it by email by Thursday 25 April 2013.
