What's in here:  Radio show/concert on Monday, more stuff April and May!
Greg Horne Music News
April 21, 2013

Howdy, friends,

I don't think there's anyone in America that hasn't said, "Whoa. What a week." The world changes so fast and so often it boggles the mind. But though my mind be indeed boggled, my thoughts are with my friends around Boston and the folks in Texas that have had to step up and face whole new realities this week. Musicians are lucky in the rare instances when their work can help interpret, respond to or comfort in times of great challenges (see my note about Guy Forsyth's album later in this email). Even when that isn't directly possible, playing music is our way to honor the human spirit and the uncertainty of life. With that in mind, these notes are for you. To a season of new beginnings...

I've got a bunch of shows and other adventures coming up in April and May, starting with a rare chance to play music with Beth Wood at Tennessee Shines Radio Show on Monday. Check out the schedule below and come visit a show or two. As you know, I make a living as both a solo performer and as sideman for friends of mine. Together we make up musical families that support each other through shows, recordings, and sharing information networks. You'll see links throughout all of my emails to their webpages (and the venues we play). Please click, listen and join their families too!

See you real soon,
greg

Attend in person: Knoxville Visitors Center, Gay St.
Tune in on the radio or online: WDVX.com
I'll be backing up Beth Wood, who is making a rare appearance in this area since she moved to Oregon several years ago. We haven't played together in a long time, so this sure to be a special show. The other guest on this live radio concert is jazz piano legend Donald Brown (I'm listening to his brand new album as I type!) And, as many of you know, this show is hosted every week by my wife Paige Travis, and our pal Bob Deck.

Greg Horne and Lance Whalen
Tuesday, May 14, 2013, 10 pm
The Well
4620 Kingston Pike, Knoxville, TN
Following the regular Tuesday night comedy show at The Well (at 8pm), Lance and I will each play solo sets. Lance lives in Nashville, and writes songs in an "Americana Noir" style that make me think of other one-of-a-kind performers like Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen and Chris Whitley. Check out his website (click his name above). Lance and I will be doing a few shows together as he begins a big East Coast tour. I encourage Knoxville folks to get out and see this, even though it's late on a Tuesday, so we can get Lance back for more shows.

It's Not All About Me...

Other members of my extended musical family have been hard at work doing great things lately. Here's a few that I'm thinking about today.

Hudson K (my friend Christina Horn and my longtime bandmate Nate Barrett) have just released an amazing album of intricately orchestrated synthy dance grooves and incisive lyrics (literally, knives and blades abound) called Ouroboros and the Black Dove. Keep an eye out for release events (sign up for their email list).

My brother's band, Rockwood Ferry, just completed a new self-titled album that will become available later this month in their hometown of Ithaca. This is the second release in 12 months for the fast-evolving band. The music and lyrics are otherworldly, using roots instruments to transport you to whole new places.

I'm excited to hear the upcoming release by Doug and Telisha called Things That Used to Shine (also the title of a true blue diamond of a song). These two have an incredible musical and life partnership that propels them all over the country. We've been co-performers at Jammin' at Hippie Jacks for a long time. I'm proud to know them and to tell you that if you don't already, you'll be proud to know them too.

My old National Guitar Workshop pal Matt Smith (an instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter of great superpowers himself) produced and recorded an album by Austin stalwart Guy Forsyth called Freedom to Fail last year. This record is full of seemingly simple songs that have the rare power to repair, restore, and inspire. I ran across it again in my collection this week and it hit me just right. Especially resonant are Guy's lines "I only want things that matter/ I only want things that you can share/ Don't give me diamond rings, or all those so called finer things/ They don't matter when they are not there." Go get this one. Also, Guy's website does funny things that are worth a visit.
