The Storm Tracker:

On the Fast Track

Despite a rain-filled season so far, the MMS track team has been hot on the track! In their last two meets, our runners have excelled, with many runners placing in a number of events, and a total of 16 first-place finishes!

At the Brookfield Academy Invitational on May 10th, Lizzie M. and Sam S. both took first place in the girls and boys long jump, respectively. Catherine N. took first in the mile run, as well. In the 100m hurdles, Kaia G. leapt to a first-place win, and in the 100m dash, both Adonia B. and Deniz D. placed first. Elyse C. dashed home with a first-place win in the 200m, while Kaia G. and Ruwandi W. placed first in the 400m.

One week later, the team geared up for the St. Matthias Bulldog Dash Meet at Martin Luther High School. MMS runners certainly didn’t lose any steam rolling into this meet, with a number of placements, including seven first-places finishes! In fact, UE3 student Kaia G. made MMS history by earning first place status in three different events, in all three age brackets. In just this one meet, the Bulldog Dash, Kaia earned herself five medals:
  • 1st place - 4x400m (7th grade)
  • 1st place – 4x100m relay (8th grade)
  • 1st place – 400m (6th grade)
  • 2nd place – 200m (6th grade)
  • 2nd place – 100m (6th grade)
As testament to the strength of our athletic program, all 30+ members of the MMS track team who participated medaled, while our girls' team placed third out of several hundred students. "All of our runners did really well," says Coach Mohr. "Everyone on the team placed in at least one event, so I think that says a lot about how hard they've worked and how it's all paying off."

The rest of our first-place finishers include Adonia B. in the 100m dash as well as our girls’ 4x100m relay team of Kaia G., Ruwandi W., Abby D. and Zoe A. The MMS girls’ 4x400m relay team of Hannah D., Adonia B., Kaia G. and Elyse C. also won first. We had two winning teams in the Sprint Medley event, with one team consisting of Maggie S., Ruwandi W., Abby D. and Zoe A.; Elyse C., Tamia F., Hannah D. and Adonia B. made up the other first-place Sprint Medley team. In the Softball Throw, Sam S. took home first place for MMS.

Congratulations to all our runners! To see how well the rest of our runners did in both track meets, check out the results on our Track and Field page by clicking here.

Alumni Track Stars Head to State!

A special congratulations to MMS Class of 2011 alumni Melissa Pelkey and Rayce Albino, who have qualified for competition in the WIAA State Track Meet, taking place tomorrow in La Crosse. Rayce, who is a sophomore at New Berlin West, will be pole vaulting at State tomorrow. Melissa, a sophomore at Franklin High School, will be competing in three events: the 3200m relay, the 1600m relay and the 400m dash. Best of luck to them both!

End of Year is Filled with Fun

With less than two weeks to go in the school year, our students have been hard at work! Between finishing up final projects, putting on elaborate plays (check out the photos of the Junior High's presentation of "The Wiz" in the photo gallery to the right) and preparing for summer, MMS students will deserve their break! Aside from schoolwork, MMS is busy preparing for a number of End-of-Year activities to celebrate another successful school year. Our End-of-Year concerts will be held next Wednesday, graduation takes place on June 7th, and we're hosting a picnic on the last day of school, June 12th. To learn more about all our End-of-Year events, click here. And, remember, we've still got some spaces open in a handful of classes during our summer session!

We'll Miss You, Mrs. Hasan!

Lower Elementary Directress Mrs. Hasan, who has spent 21 years at Milwaukee Montessori School, will be retiring after this school year. During her tenure at MMS, Mrs. Hasan has worked in the toddler room, been a Children's House assistant, an Upper Elementary assistant and, after completing her Montessori training, has been a Lower Elementary Directress for seven years. Mrs. Hasan has been a wonderful, caring teacher to her students, and an excellent colleague to our faculty and staff. Upon her retirement, Mrs. Hasan plans to move to Akron, Ohio, where she will have the opportunity to spend more time with her daughter. Replacing Mrs. Hasan will be Mrs. Klein, who currently serves as the classroom assistant. Mrs. Klein has been at MMS for 15 years and is ready to take the reigns as Directress. Though we will miss Mrs. Hasan dearly, we wish her the best of luck (and relaxation) in her retirement!
