Undergraduate Literary Magazines Honored

AWP has awarded its National Program Directors' Prize to two undergraduate literary magazines. Glass Mountain, from the University of Houston, was selected by Bonnie Culver of Wilkes University to receive the award for content. Totem, from Gannon University, was selected by Roger Lathbury of Orchises Press to receive the award for design. Each winning magazine received $500.

WC&C Scholarship Recipients Announced

We congratulate the winners of the 2013 WC&C Scholarship Competition, Caitlin Doyle for poetry and Jean-Marie Saporito for fiction, each of whom received $500 toward attendance at a writing center, conference, festival, retreat, or residency. In addition to honoring accomplished writers, the contest promotes the incredible work being done at our WC&C member organizations. We hope you will take the time to visit AWP's directory and explore them all.

AWP Welcomes New Board Members

1,400 members voted in our last election for three candidates who ran unopposed. AWP members elected three new regional representatives to our board of directors: Anna Leahy of Chapman University to represent our members of the Pacific West, Jill Christman of Ball State University to represent the Midwest, and David Rothman of Western State Colorado University to represent the West. The slate of candidates carried 97% of the total votes cast.

Proposed Articles & Bylaws Fall Short of Attracting a Quorum

Although 1,400 voters was four times the size of the typical turnout for an AWP election, only 15% of our eligible voters participated in the last election. To ratify the proposed articles of incorporation and bylaws, 60% of our eligible members must vote. 1,245 voted in favor of adopting the proposed articles and bylaws. 43 opposed, and 115 abstained. This was well short of the 5,716 votes we needed to achieve a quorum. As a consequence, we cannot yet adopt the new articles and bylaws.

AWP needs new articles and bylaws to help our association adapt to the growing numbers and diversity of our membership. Our current bylaws and articles contain antiquated components from the 1960s, when our governance served fewer than 100 writers teaching at 20 colleges and universities. We will ask you to vote again this August. Please vote then and help us achieve a quorum on this crucial initiative. Please help AWP become a modern, more resourceful, and more effective association.
