Market News - May 18

Welcome to the 7th season of the Withrow Park Farmers’ Market! It’s shaping up to be a wonderful season filled with a bounty of local produce and meats, tasty prepared foods, delicious baked goods, and more. We are excited to have many returning vendors and some new ones too. We will also have a variety of special guests, musicians, and activities throughout the season, including some great activities for all ages! Read on to find out about what you can expect on Opening Day.
 

Welcoming Back Our Returning Vendors...
 
Brian Hamlin (from Toronto) keeps bees in several locations in Toronto and across Ontario. He will have honeys from Toronto, Rice Lake, Peterborough, and Georgina Island First Nations as well as organic spice infused honey, beeswax candles, and soaps. Stop by for a taste!
 
Cookstown Greens (from Thornton) will have the first, freshly-harvested crop of white and green asparagus. They will also have mixed lettuces, specialty leafy greens, and some root veggies including sunchokes, carrots, and potatoes.
 

Field Sparrow Farms (from Bobcaygeon) will have various cuts of 100% grass-finished beef, as well as other meat products.
 

Weber’s Natural Meats (from Paisley) will be bringing turkey eggs and goose eggs, as well as frozen beef, pork, guinea fowl, duck, turkey parts, and sausages.
 
Roger Wils (from Toronto) is returning to the market as Brussels Bistro. This week he will have his delicious croissants, pastries, and quiches.
 
St. John’s Bakery (from Toronto) will have a wide assortment of their handmade organic breads, including spelt, olive & cilantro, walnut & raisin, and multigrain varieties, as well as english muffins, cookies, and scones.


Monforte Dairy Co. (from Stratford) will have their fresh cheeses, including sheep ricotta, pecorino presco and sheep/goat cream cheeses. Other varieties include Water Buffalo Waltzing Matilda, Sheeps' Milk Paradiso, Ash-Ripened Cheeses and a whole selection of hard aged cheeses like Sheep Cheddar, Goat Gouda, Cows' Milk Abondance. You can also get the famous Bauman Crackers, whey-fed pork summer sausage and even a little Paganelli Italian Charcuterie.

Tiffinday (from Toronto) will have their scrumptious vegan Indian food. This week they will have timpa wheelsvegetable samosas, a sweet potato curry (local grown) served with brown basmati rice, and mixed vegetable curry served with rice.
 
Stop by for a warm cup of freshly-brewed fair trade organic coffee from the folks at Coffeecology (from Dundas). You can also pick up coffee beans, coffee gift boxes, and travel coffee mugs. Speak to them about their coffee delivery subscription (new subscribers receive a free jar of coffee beans).


Introducing Our New Vendors...

Kind Organics (from Newmarket) will have sunflower sproutspea shoots, other sproutssprout salads, kombucha, and herbal tinctures. They will also have several flavours of herb-infused raw chocolates; the chocolate is made using Kind Organic's herbs and organic raw cacao from ChocoSol Traders.

Murray’s Farm (from Cambridge) will have heritage chicken eggsduck eggs, various cuts of Berkshire pork, and several types of pork sausages. Watch for produce from Murray's farm later in the season.

Eudora’s Fine Foods (from Brampton) will be selling their Indian cooking sauces made with natural and organic ingredients. They have a variety of sauces, marinades, and chutneys.  Try their signature sauce Khaldin, a coconut and cilantro sauce that is great with chicken, seafood and many veggies. Be sure to stop by for a sample!
 

Sweet Sammies Ice Cream Sandwich Co. (from Toronto) is bringing their handcrafted ice-cream sandwiches, made with fresh local ingredients and no preservatives or artificial flavours. Flavours this week are Crownie (vanilla bean ice cream on brownie-cookies), Triple C's (chocolate ice cream on chocolate chip cookies), O'Canada (maple-bacon ice cream in a red velvet whoopee pie), and Dr. Feel Good (rum-raisin ice cream on oatmeal raisin cookies). Watch for new flavours throughout the season, featuring produce from the market!

Next week watch for the following vendors: Fiddlehead Farm (from Demorestville), Haystrom Farm (from Picton), Healthy Choice Farm (from Newmarket), Hooked Inc. (from Toronto), and Manning Canning (from Toronto). We will announce new vendors each week in the newsletter as they return to the market.
 
Opening Day Special Activities and Guests:

Cookbook Swap with the Riverdale Arts & Letters Club - Want to make some room on your cookbook shelf? Then bring your old (but in good condition) cookbooks to our swap! Bring a book, take a book. If you don’t have a book for the exchange, but see something you’d like, no worries: you can have it for a suggested monetary donation (all proceeds will be given to charity!).

Clothing Repairathon - Bring your slightly damaged duds to the park for a quick stitch up. Have a loose button, a small rip or hole? Bring it! The Clothing Repairathon runs free public events, where anyone can bring clothing to be repaired by volunteers.

Cat Rescue Help - Visit with the cat rescuers from Cherry Street Cats
, and find out how you can assist a feline friend in need.

Seedlings and FREE City compost - Pick up an heirloom veggie seedling for your veg patch from Young Urban Farmers
and Cultivate Toronto; Bring buckets, wheelbarrows, bags... for the compost (courtesy of Councillor Paula Fletcher).

Bike Tune-Ups - Bring your bike for a FREE basic tune-up with the folks from Ward 29 Bikes and Ward 30 Cycling Group (from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.).

Transplants and berry vinegar - From the Riverdale Meadow Community Garden.
 

Got Gardening Questions? - Visit with the Toronto Master Gardeners,
a volunteer group of enthusiastic and knowledgeable gardeners.

Crafters - Catherine Thomas (recycled wood bird houses) and Barb Lewis (jewellery) will be selling their beautiful wares.

The market is open every Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. until October 26, rain or shine! Withrow Park is one block south of Danforth between Carlaw & Logan.
