Blogging about teachers leading change

LfL launched the Teacher Leadership blog earlier this month. It offers accounts of shared leadership, particularly in relation to the role of the teacher and promotes a view of teacher professionality which does not assume that leadership only flows from positions of authority or from special roles of responsibility.

To quote David Frost in the podcast that supported the launch of the blog: “it is about enabling all teachers to develop their leadership capacity; it is about mobilising teachers’ creativity, commitment and sense of moral purpose, to enable them to lead change".

Visit the blog at www.lflteacherleadership.org and join in the dialogue.

  Teacher Leadership in action

The HertsCam 2013 Annual Conference

Launching the blog mentioned above was just one feature of this extraordinary conference in which 140 teachers already involved in teacher leadership came together to share accounts of their development projects and engage in spirited dialogue.  The aim was to build professional knowledge together and provide mutual inspiration and encouragement that strengthens our moral purpose.

The event involved 16 seminars led by teachers, various networking activities and a keynote address by John Naughton, the Vice President of Wolfson College and renowned columnist in The Observer newspaper.  In addition, a speech by Val Hill, Assistant Headteacher at Birchwood High School, was a stunning call to arms.  This will be published in due course on the HertsCam website. You can read a detailed account of the event on the Teacher Leadership blog.

  New publication

A chapter  entitled 'Ghana: Resolving the Tensions Between Colonial Values and Contemporary Policies' by John MacBeath and Sue Swaffield has just been published in the book School Level Leadership in post-conflict Societies.

Other chapters in the book consider school leadership in post-new war environments including Rwanda, Sri Lanka, Lebanon, Kosovo and Northern Ireland. Simon Clarke, who together with Tom  O'Donoghue edited the book, was a member of the Australian research team for the Carpe Vitam: Leadership for Learning project.
