Effective Strategies:  Transit-Oriented Development in the Chicago Region
Together North Jersey is compiling examples of effective strategies and actions that are being implemented in New Jersey and elsewhere in the U.S. and internationally to build and maintain healthy and sustainable communities in the 21st century. This week we are featuring a new report from the Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) that compares the characteristics of development in the half-mile radius around the Chicago region’s transit stations to that of the Chicago region as a whole. The comparisons are based on a number of quantitative characteristics of transit-oriented development (TOD), including household growth, vehicle miles traveled (VMT), and jobs. The report proceeds to create a place typology matrix that provides a framework with which to examine a set of performances metrics. The typology matrix categorizes each area within a half-mile of a transit station – or “transit zone” – based on land-use mix and residential VMT. Read full report here.
