149 years of service

Retiring faculty and staff members were honored during a retirement reception on May 14 at the Founders. Together, they have devoted 149 years of service to SWU.

Driving Range Nearing Completion

The new ball dispensing shelter and putting green are the latest developments taking shape at the new driving range. SWU looks forward to completing this facility, which will benefit its golf teams and become an asset to share with golfers in the community.

Graduate makes ‘surprise’ proposal

Heather Kay of Easley came to Southern Wesleyan University’s graduation ceremony May 11 planning to celebrate boyfriend Derrick Craft’s graduation along with family members. After Craft emerged from the ceremony, newly-minted business degree in hand, he pulled out an engagement ring and presented it to Kay. Craft is from Liberty.

Childress given theology award

Religion professor Mari Gonlag, left, congratulates Zachary L. Childress of Thomasville, N.C. He became the first recipient of the Zondervan Theology Award, given for his outstanding achievements in the study of theology.

News from HR

Two new employees will be joining our SWU community in June. Please join us in welcoming them:

Arcola Jones begins June 1 as admissions coordinator, recruiting students for the AGS program in the Columbia area. Jones received her BS in business administration from Alcorn State University in Mississippi, and graduated from SWU’s MBA program this past December. Her previous work experience includes several years with the Xerox Corporation in customer and technical support and as an operations manager. Most recently, she served as assistant lead at PricewaterhouseCoopers managing client engagement and customer service.

Jared Trudel has been appointed as admissions counselor for the traditional program starting on June 17. Trudel received his bachelor’s degree in business administration from Indiana Wesleyan and has served in IWU’s admissions office since 2010. He also gained experience in recruiting and sales with the Southwestern Company over a three-year period. He is the son of Dr. Jeannie Trudel, dean of the School of Business and Grant Trudel, adjunct faculty member.

Holiday Schedule

Don’t come to work next Monday! University offices will be closed on Monday, May 27, in observance of Memorial Day. Although this day unofficially marks the beginning of summer, this day is set aside to honor the men and women who have died while serving in the U.S. military. Thank God for those who have served in the military, who continue to serve and for those families who have lost someone while serving in the military.

SWU’s extended Independence Day break is scheduled for Thursday and Friday, July 4 and 5.

'Inventive' summer camp at SWU

Camp Invention, a summer day camp full of “real world” challenges with a fun twist, is returning to SWU June 17-21. In partnership with Invent Now Kids, the nationally-acclaimed, week-long camp is for children entering grades one through six. Read more>>
