The ads, for Camel Crush cigarettes, have appeared in the April, May or June issues of at least 24 magazines, including several with large teen readerships. [...]

The health groups are urging the state attorneys general to investigate whether the ad campaign violates a provision of the 1998 settlement that prohibits tobacco companies from taking "any action, directly or indirectly, to target Youth within any Settling State in the advertising, promotion or marketing of Tobacco Products.”

Use of Electronic Cigarettes Among State Tobacco Cessation Quitline Callers.
Vickerman KA, Carpenter KM, Altman T, Nash CM, Zbikowski SM. Nicotine Tob Res. 2013 May 8. [Epub ahead of print]

This study examined e-cigarette use among tobacco users seeking help from state tobacco quitlines, the reasons for its use, and whether e-cigarette use influences success with quitting tobacco. Results show that nearly one-third of respondents reported ever using or trying e-cigarettes. Of those who had tried e-cigarettes, over six in ten (61.7%) reported using them for less than one month. Reasons for using e-cigarettes including for help with quitting other tobacco (51.3%) or to replace other tobacco (15.2%). E-cigarette users (both those who had used e-cigarettes for more than one month and less than one month) were significantly less likely to be quit from tobacco seven months after calling a state quitline compared with participants who had never tried e-cigarettes (30-day point prevalence rates: 16.6% and 21.7% vs. 31.3%, p<.001). The authors conclude that the rates of e-cigarette use, and the use of e-cigarettes as  cessation aids should inform policy and treatment discussions on this topic, especially since the FDA has not approved e-cigarettes as a cessation aid.

Increasing the Reach of Quitlines Through Active Telephone Recruitment: Do Cold-Called Smokers Differ from Quitline Callers?
Tzelepis F, Paul CL, Duncan SL, Walsh RA, Wiggers J, Knight J. Nicotine Tob Res. 2012 Dec;14(12):1488-93. doi: 10.1093/ntr/ntr317. Epub 2012 Feb 17.

This study examined whether active telephone recruitment (“cold calling”) for enrollment in telephone quitlines reaches new groups of smokers. First-time quitline callers to the New South Wales Quitline were compared to cold-called participants who received telephone counseling from the electronic NSW telephone directory. Results showed that male smokers, older age groups, those living in nonmetropolitan areas, smokers who took longer to smoke their first cigarette after waking, consumed fewer cigarettes per day, and were less motivated to quit had greater odds of being referred to the quitline through cold calling. The authors concluded that active telephone recruitment (cold calling) enrolls new groups of smokers to quitlines, and suggest that the reach of quitlines could be improved if quitlines incorporated cold calling into their recruitment strategies.

Preventing Chronic Disease Volume 10 — May 16, 2013.
Smoke-Free Rules and Secondhand Smoke Exposure in Homes and Vehicles Among US Adults, 2009–2010.
King BA, Dube SR, Homa DM. Prev Chronic Dis 2013;10:120218.

This study examined the prevalence and correlates of voluntary smoke-free rules and SHS exposure in homes and vehicles among US adults through analysis of data from the 2009-2010 National Adult Tobacco Survey. Results showed that the national prevalence of voluntary smoke-free rules was 81.1%, and the prevalence of past-7-day SHS exposure was 6.0% in homes and 9.2% in vehicles. In addition, results indicated that SHS exposure among nonsmokers was greatest among men, younger adults, non-Hispanic blacks, and those with a lower level of education. The authors concluded that disparities in exposure still exist among certain states and subpopulations, and that efforts are needed to warn about the dangers of SHS and to promote voluntary smoke-free home and vehicle rules.

Attitudes Towards SMS Text Message Smoking Cessation Support: A Qualitative Study of Pregnant Smokers.
Naughton F, Jamison J, Sutton S. Health Educ Res. 2013 May 2. [Epub ahead of print]

This study examined the attitudes of women who currently or previously smoked while pregnant toward receiving pregnancy-related smoking cessation support by text message. Data were collected by semi-structured interviews and focus groups with 33 women, and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results showed that texting was regarded as a highly convenient mode of support delivery leading to high levels of attention to messages. While those who did not receive text messages had high expectations for real-time intervention with smoking behaviors, those who did receive text messages found them to be helpful, despite the lack of a real-time intervention element. Respondents also highlighted the impact of perceived source, including personalization and personal relevance of messages. The authors conclude that maximizing personalization and personal relevance can increase the value of text message support and reduce the risk of disengagement.
