SWU degree a milestone along road to recovery


SWU faculty members applauded Stephen Smith of Augusta, Ga., and other graduates as they marched along Wesleyan Drive at the beginning of graduation ceremonies May 11 at the university’s Central campus.

Gettys Middle School in Easley announced that Amy Byrd, a 1998 SWU music graduate, was named their Teacher of the Year for 2013-14. Byrd teaches chorus and is also the wife of 1999 SWU graduate Darian Byrd, who is principal at Forest Acres Elementary School, also located in Easley.

Amy Shepard of Central, a 2012 Human Services graduate, received the Parent Teacher of the Year award at Tamassee DAR School. She is completing her first year at the school. 

Nikola Lambic, a recent graduate and member of the SWU Men's Basketball Team, was selected as SSAC Male Honor Student-Athlete of the Year. He was recognized as the top male student-athlete in the entire conference.

Additional student-athletes honored included Kelsey Deerinwater of the Lady Warriors Volleyball Team, named as SWU's Musco Lighting Female Honor Student-Athlete. Selected for SSAC All-Academic honors for spring 2013 were Justin Adams, David Jones, Stephen Wyatt, Wade Metcalf and Kendall Ray.

Business students win first-place in competition


SWU News recently ran an item about how business students Claudio Sanches, Katie Stilwell and Raphael Fernandes broke into the Business Strategy Game’s Global Top 100. They went on to reach first-place!

Three Free Jazz Concerts

 
In June the weather is hot, but with three free concerts featuring cool jazz, musical refreshment isn’t far away. Concerts will be June 19, 7 p.m. at Folger Fine Arts Auditorium on the Central campus, June 20, 6:30 p.m. at the Main Street Deli in downtown Central and June 22, 11 a.m. at Newton Hobson Chapel and Fine Arts Center on the Central campus.
Organized in conjunction with SWU’s Summer Jazz Experience, the concerts will feature renowned jazz recording and performing artists, paired with jazz camp participants and area musicians. SWU Athletics announces camps


This summer will be filled with activity as Warriors coaches and players conduct camps for all age groups and experience levels. Sports include basketball, baseball, soccer and volleyball. Read more>>

Holiday Schedule


The university is observing Memorial Day today and all offices are closed.  SWU employees will enjoy an extended Independence Day break in July. All university offices will be closed Thursday and Friday, July 4 and 5.
 

Gonlag at ‘Come to the Water’ conference


Dr. Mari Gonlag, professor of religion, attended the Come to the Water conference, a gathering of church planters, educators, missionaries, pastors and other organizations that took place in April at Estes Park, Colo. Gonlag serves on the board of the Wesleyan Holiness Women Clergy organization, organizers for the international event, now in its tenth year. Read more>>

Haiti Bound
 

Dave Tolan, SWU missions mobilizer, left May 22, along with a group of students, for a missions trip to Haiti. Students Sylvain Brevil, Daniel Loggins, and Jasmine Smith will be partnering with SWU graduates Bobby and Magalie Boyer and Global Partners missionaries Dan and Joy Irvine. They will return to the U.S. May 30. Pray for their safety and that God will use them as they work with local churches and orphanages.
