University recognizes 55 employees for service
Bemidji State University recognized 55 employees with a combined 970 years of service to the university during the sixth annual Length of Service Awards ceremony, May 2, in the Beaux Arts Ballroom.

Moses Tsang to receive honorary doctorate
 Moses Tsang, executive chairman of Hong Kong-based AP Capital Holdings and a global board member of The Nature Conservancy, will receive an honorary doctorate from the university during Bemidji State's 94th Commencement ceremony on May 10.
Tsang came to Bemidji State in 1969 and graduated in 1972 with a degree in social work. In 1976, after completing a master’s degree and finishing all but a dissertation toward a doctorate, Tsang took a friend’s advice and quickly became a star in the field of global finance. He now dedicates much of his time to the protection and conservation of the planet's environment and natural resources.

Cooper Collection of native portraits unveiled at AIRC
On April 18, Bemidji State and the American Indian Resource Center unveiled a permanent installation of Native American portraits taken by local photographer Neil Hakkerup at the dawn of the 20th century. The installation features 22 large prints and several smaller prints of native people from the Leech Lake and Red Lake nations taken between 1900-1915, including photographs of the city’s namesake, Chief Bemidji. The collection, which also includes original glass photo reproduction plates, has been donated to the BSU Foundation for permanent display in the American Indian Resource Center by David and Kathy Cooper (pictured above).

Guilfoile named associate VP of academic affairs
Patrick Guilfoile has been named Bemidji State's associate vice president of academic affairs. Guilfoile had been filling the position on an interim basis since 2009.

Design students present at annual Portfolio Reviews
More than two dozen senior design technology students presented their final portfolios during the design technology program's annual portfolio reviews on May 3 in Bridgeman Hall. During the review, student work is reviewed by peers, faculty and more than 70 visiting professionals. Those professionals, representing more than 50 design-related companies from across the United States, also offered a variety of presentations to discuss the future of the design industry.

De-Stress With Pets offers a break from study
Spending some quiet time with a furry friend proved to be the perfect stress reliever for students on the last full day of spring semester classes, May 1. Sponsored by Lifestyle Educators, the event provided students a chance to relax before final exams begin with pets from the Beltrami Humane Society.
Nearly 200 students present at Student Scholarship and Creative Achievement Conference
Bemidji State's 14th Annual Student Scholarship and Creative Achievement Conference showcased the varied works of nearly 200 students during presentations, performances, exhibits and poster sessions on April 10. The conference began with a keynote from BSU alum Jason Edens, founding director of the Rural Renewable Energy Alliance, which aims to solve energy poverty with low-cost solar generators. Following the address, more than 80 students made presentations on a vast array of topics, including a study on whether money correlates with happiness; a review of the methods used to estimate tiger populations; violence in youth hockey; how North Dakota’s oil boom has affected the state’s politics; and a study examining whether a minor-league baseball team’s major-league affiliation has an impact on attendance.

Keys to Sophomore Success event promotes persistence and progress
Faculty and staff pledged their support for second-year students at an inaugural Key to Success for Sophomore Students held April 10 in conjunction with the Student Scholarship and Creative Achievement Conference. The event honors the success of all sophomore and second-year students as they continue their academic progress at BSU. Students received a token symbolizing academic achievements and continued success at BSU, intended to honor student persistence and support progress toward graduation.

Student work featured in Ramsey Gallery
Dan Swenson, a senior from Bemidji fulfilling the requirements of his art major, opened the show "Cyclical Drift" in the Ramsey Gallery on April 29. The show runs through May 24 and features both digital and traditional works by the artist.

Thirteen Bemidji State students attended the 34th annual Pi Mu Epsilon conference April 12-13 at St. John’s University in St. Cloud. Two of those students, Amanda Boring and Larry Moeller, gave talks at the conference.

Beaver Athletics Update
Tracy Dill named director of athletics
On April 25, President Hanson announced Tracy Dill as the university’s next director of intercollegiate athletics. Dill joins Beaver Athletics after 27 years at St. Cloud State University, where he has served as associate athletic director since 1999. Dill's duties as Bemidji State's second full-time athletic director begin June 1.
