May 2013 Newsletter

A lot has happened since the last newsletter. The branch has played host to the Student Lifesaving National Championships, and the Keynsham LSC Open competition. We've also brought local lifesavers together at the Baywatch Bakeoff! You can read more about all of these events in this month's e-mail - and see what exciting events the branch is running for YOU in the coming months. There's too much to fit  in a single newsletter, so remember to check the website regularly for the latest news and events!

Calling All Lifeguards: 8 Jun 2013
The RLSS West Region lifeguard competition is taking place in Keynsham on 8 June. Teams of four from local leisure centres will compete to prove that they are the best lifeguards in the area! Please contact david@rlsswest.org.uk if you and your colleagues are interested in entering a team.

Drowning Prevention Week: 22-30 Jun 2013
400 people drown in the UK each year: so what will your group do Drowning Prevention Week? Perhaps you could run free taster sessions? Hold a community life support workshop? Give a lifesaving demonstration? Or visit local schools to offer water safety advice? Free promotional materials and support are available from the branch. Together we can bring down the number of drownings! See www.drowningpreventionweek.org.uk or contact david@rlsswest.org.uk for more details.

Baywatch Bakeoff
Baywatch BakeoffAt the branch AGM back in October you told us that you wanted more joint socials, so the Baywatch Bakeoff was born! Nine lifesavers from three different clubs (Keynsham LSC, Bath Uni LSC and Bristol Uni LSC) brought lifesaving-themed cakes along, with Cathy Baldwin (Bristol Uni LSC) winning the prize for best presentation for her "first aid kit" cake. Rebecca Mason (Keynsham LSC) won the prize for best tasting cake for her lifeguard flag-themed battenberg. With the baking out of the way, we settled down to watch some classic episodes of Baywatch and Bondi Rescue on the big screen! Check out www.facebook.com/RLSSWestRegion for photos of all the culinary creations!

RLSS National Championships: 6 Jul 2013
The RLSS A&NW branch heats of the national championships have been provisionally booked for the 6th July from 2-7pm in Trowbridge. Pairs and individuals will take part in a land-based initiative, a water-based initiative, a rope-throw and a swim-and-tow. The best competitors in each category will progress through to the regional heats on 21st Sept in Bristol, and the National Championships will take place on 9 Nov in Sheffield. If you would like to take part, we'll publish more details on the West Region Website soon.

Open Water Taster Sessions: 8 & 12 June 2013
RLSS A&NW is running two open-water taster sessions for Bristol Uni LSC at Henleaze Swimming Lake in North Bristol. Any spare spaces will be offered to other local lifesavers on a first-come first-served basis. This is a great opportunity to put your lifesaving skills to the test in a safe open-water environment. These friendly sessions are perfect for those with no previous experience of open-water lifesaving. Each 2-hour session costs just £4, with fully qualified instructors.
Contact david@rlsswest.org.uk to register your interest.
