One more week!

On a recent farm trip, farmers told us that this year everything is 4 weeks behind (last year it was the opposite), so you will see that reflected at the market for the first few weeks as our farmers start to gradually trickle back as growing conditions allow. We will have all the vendor and produce updates in the May 18 issue of the newsletter for you (arriving in your mail boxes on Thursday May 16!).

Returning vendors are: Brian Hamlin (honey), Coffeecology (coffee beans & brew), Cookstown Greens, Country Meadows Organics (olives & oil, cheese, produce, eggs), Danbrie Farms (maple syrup, preserves & produce), Feast of Fields (fruit), Field Sparrow Farms (beef), Fresh Veggies, Haystrom Farm (produce & preserves), Healthy Choice Farm (produce), Hooked Inc. (fish), Manning Canning (jams & pickles), Monforte Dairy (cheese), Potager du Knada (produce), chef Roger Wils newly reincarnated as the Brussels Bistro (baked goods), St. John's Bakery (bread), Tiffinday (Indian take-away), and Webers Meats (who also have eggs).

Introducing this season: Eudora's Fine Foods (ethnic sauces), Fiddlehead Farm (produce), Kind Organics (greens, tea, kombucha, chocolate), Murray's Farm (meat, eggs, produce, heirloom apples), and Sweet Sammies (ice cream sandwiches). And there may be more!

By the way, check out the latest post on our market community blog!

For our market opening day, we have special activities planned, and special guests lined up:
  • Cookbook Swap with the Riverdale Arts & Letters Club - Want to make some room on your cookbook shelf? Then bring your old (but in good condition) cookbooks to our swap! Bring a book, take a book.
  • Repairathon - bring your slightly damaged duds to the park for a quick stitch up with Waste Nothing's Michael Fagan.
  • Visit with the cat rescuers from Cherry Street Cats, and find out how you can assist a feline friend in need.
  • For gardeners: seedlings & FREE City compost - pick an heirloom veggie seedling for your veg patch from Young Urban Farmers and Cultivate Toronto; bring buckets, wheelbarrows, bags... for the compost - courtesy of Councillor Paula Fletcher.
  • Bring your bike for a FREE basic tune-up with the folks from Ward 29 Bikes and Ward 30 Cycling Group (from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m.).
  • Transplants & berry vinegar from the Riverdale Meadow Community Garden.
  • Toronto Master Gardeners - here to answer your gardening questions.
  • Crafts: Catherine Thomas (recycled wood bird houses) and Barb Lewis (jewellery).
Here are a couple of interesting events for this weekend and beyond:
  • On May 11 join the Bells on Danforth for a group ride to Queen's Park in celebration of bike lanes on Danforth. The ride starts at noon at East Lynn Park (a long block west of Woodbine).
  • Councillor Paula Fletcher is organizing our ward's Environment Day in Riverdale Park from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. this Saturday.
  • The Toronto Farmers' Market Network presents a screening of Symphony of the Soil, made by filmmaker, Debra Koons Garcia of 'The Future of Food'.  This recently released documentary has not been widely seen, so this is a unique opportunity. Wed May 29, 7p.m. at the Royal Theatre, 608 College St. Tickets at the door: $10 (discount for kids).
  • Taste of the Food Terminal, Sat May 25, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Not much longer now...
