It looks like you took a wrong turn at that Wil Wheaton meme and ended up right here smack dab in the middle of a comedic write-up for T&G’s next show, The Great American Trailer Park Musical.  Well, don’t you worry; we’ll make sure your stay is pleasant.

First thing you should know right off the bat is this show is awesome.  I’m talking 6-inch huntin’ knife strapped to your leg kind of awesome.  Second, this show has strong language and adult themes.  Now, doesn’t that sound fantastic?!  It’s a musical – and it has strong language and adult themes! That’s awesome.

Written by David Nehls and Betsy Kelso and directed by the self-proclaimed fancy lad, Jonathan Sparks. The Great American Trailer Park Musical will take you a ride unlike any other seen on the T&G stage (said for dramatic effect… I don’t have any real data to back this up).

So when preparing yourself for the unbridled havoc of a stripper on the run, an agoraphobic housewife and her toll-collector husband, a marker-sniffing ex-boyfriend, hysterical pregnancies, love triangles, adultery, and flantastic moments of ridiculousness, be sure to have your drink of choice at the ready.

Starring Don Smith, Amy Miller, Greer Caldwell, Asia Meana, Mandy Riley, Melissa Baxter, and Aaron Newman, The Great American Trailer Park Musical runs June 14-16 and 20-23.  Head to our website at www.townandgownplayers.org for more information. Don’t miss this show! Buy your tickets now.

HAMLET AUDITIONS
Directed by Mike Smith

The audition’s the thing wherein we’ll catch the conscience of a King!

There isn’t much more time before we finally get to the auditions for Hamlet.  I know that I am biting my nails in anticipation for this theatrical event. I say event because that is a better way of looking at the play.   This is going to be a once in a lifetime opportunity to work on a play that truly deserves the term classic.   I know that there are some of you that are super excited about this show and I can’t wait to see you at the auditions, but I wanted to take a moment to speak with those of you who are perhaps nervous about working on Shakespeare and this play in particular.

Don’t be.

I love working with actors, both those who have worked on a hundred plays, and those that have never stepped foot on the stage.   I’ve got a great crew and we will help you be proud of the work you do.   Besides, Shakespeare is fun.   You can enjoy the bombast of heroic overacting, and the subtlety of real human interactions, generally in the same play sometimes the same scene.  The man was a master of his craft and this is one of his best works.  We think of this play as a drama and a tragedy, and of course it is, but you will be surprised how much humor finds its way into this play.  And how much fun you will have in the rehearsals of it.    Between sword fights, ghosts, and good old fashioned murder mysteries, I think you will have a blast spending this summer with Hamlet.

You can come with a sonnet ready to read, or just come willing to try.  There will be cold readings from the script.  We will be having auditions 6:30 Monday andTuesday, June 17-18 with call backs later in the week if we feel we need them.

GOD OF CARNAGE
by Yasmina Reza
Directed by Rick Rose

I hope you are prepared for an onslaught of amazing theatre this summer.  After our fabulous visit to Starke, Florida, in The Great American Trailer Park Musical, stick around as the Town & Gown Players 60th Season continues with the Second Stage performance of God of Carnage, written by Yazmina Reza (who also wrote the award winning, ART) and translated by Christopher Hampton.

Described as “a comedy of manners without the manners”, Reza’s play centers on a meeting of two sets of parents to resolve – in a civilized manner – an altercation between their sons on a playground.  As the meeting progresses and alcohol flows, tensions emerge and the gloves come off.

Undoubtedly, you will notice a cast and crew featuring some of T&G’s finest.  At the helm is Rick Rose, assisted by Gay McCommons.  Taking the stage we have Bryn Adamson, Terrell Austin, Steve Elliott-Gower and Allen Rowell.  With such a fine collection of talent, God of Carnage promises to be a fantastic night of theatre.

The show runs June 28 through June 30, 2013, with performances at 8 pm Fridayand Saturday and 2 pm Sunday.  This performance is $5 general admission (Free for season ticket holders).  Tickets are available at the door and no reservations will be taken.  Please note the play contains adult language and situations – and pretty graphic expectoration.

P.S.  Thoughts? Questions?  Have a Second Stage show idea that must be done?!  Email us at secondstage@townandgownplayers.org.

Every year we put on six Mainstage and four Second Stage shows.  A Mainstage show is one that is chosen by a play reading committee and  the board.  A Second Stage show is proposed by any individual who would like to use our space to put on what ever kind of show they want.

This season I have had the pleasure of being involved in three of the Second Stage shows... and I have been humbled.  Every single one the people involved were so passionate about it.  I do theatre for the love of it.  But way too often one can get caught up in the politics, in the mechanics, in the drama of the real life of it.  You can forget that new, fresh, experimental, unknown and inexperienced theatre is where it all comes from, is where the growth begins, is where the heart starts to beat with the infinite possibilities of it all.

Too often those who are 'established' get worried to put their name on something new.  Something risky.  Not wanting to be associated with something that might bomb.  Not me.  I'll put my name on anything where those working on it give all they've got.  Where those new (and experienced) people take on something 'independent' instead of a 'blockbuster'.

I want to constantly be reminded of my love for theatre.  I want to continue to learn and try things that might be risky, might scare me, might challenge me beyond my comfort zone.  I'll stop growing if I don't.  And I've stood still far too many times...

See you at the show!
