Newsletter No.3 December 2013

Welcome to our Festive Newsletter. We have been so busy over the last few months and as we approach the end of 2013, we thought it a good time to recap them. Before the festivities commence, we'd like to take the opportunity to thank all of our participants, partners, funders for all of their support and enthusiasm this year, and for making it a great one for People Express. So thank you and we hope your festive season is a merry one!
Season's Greeting
The People Express Team

Famous at Last
Famous at Last is a Heritage Lottery funded film project exploring the stories of older people in South Derbyshire. The film premiered at Oaklands Village on 21st November, receiving great feedback. We were delighted that so many of the participants, their families and friends were able to come and celebrate this wonderful project. Special thanks to Oaklands Village for hosting the event, CVS for their continued help throughout the project and to Magic Attic for helping us source archive material. The film will soon be available online, so keep an eye out for tweets, with the link. A link to our twitter account can be found at the bottom of the page, so if you don't already, please follow us and we promise to keep you up to date on the latest goings on here at People Express.

Twist and Shout
SHOUT! is a community group made up of families with children with disabilities, and their siblings.
Over the Summer Holidays, the group attended workshops every Tuesday here at People Express, taking part in lots of creative activities including Beat Boxing, Street Dance, DIY Pin Hole Camera making, Kobudo- Japanese Stage Combat, Crotchet, Graffiti, Ukulele making and much more! The children have had a fantastic time trying out new artforms and the parents seem to be having as much fun too!
For more information on all activities please contact Shout directly at shout.southderbyshire@gmail.com.

The Culture Club

The Culture Club is a group set up to respond to the need for a local resource for the young LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning) community in South Derbyshire. The group, which began in April, met weekly with writer Kevin Fegan over a 7 week period to create an exhibition which was displayed in this year's Festival of Leisure. The group created an app rap, based around applications they wished they could get for their phones. The work is currently on display at The Old Pressing Shop. If you would like to get involved in this group, please contact us on enquiries@people-express.org.uk

UHT- Uniting Hatton Together

UHT began at Heathfields School, Hatton in March to coincide with the schools Art Week. The workshops included African Drumming, Willow weaving and Wood carving, Samba Carnival Dancing, Ceramics and Street Dance. The project continues to run after school every Thursday, giving pupils, siblings, parents and carers the opportunity to learn and participate in different art forms. Skills learnt in past workshops such as wood carving and willow weaving have been put to use to make 2 benches to go in the school grounds. In the Autumn Term the school has played host to grafitti, silk painting, mosaic making, and Christmas crafts.

BOOM!

BOOM! worked with Street Dance teacher Christina on a weekly basis to learn a dance routine which they performed at the Dance in the Forest event in Rosliston at the end of June in front of an audience of hundred's. A massive achievement for a group of young women who had never danced previous to this project- so well done girls!

Reach Out!

Over the summer we ran a series of free creative sessions at Reach, a charity shop on the High Street, Swadlincote. The project 'Summer Grove' was a chance for shoppers and passers-by to engage in activities such as Bird Box making, Silk Painting, Mosaics and an opportunity to record their own radio show! The sessions ran every Tuesday and Thursday through the Summer. Next time you pass the shop, pop in and see some of the worked created by local people, including the colourful mosaic artwork in the display window!
