Veterans Day

Veterans Day is a day to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom, and show the veterans among us—whether they be family, colleagues, neighbors, or friends—that we appreciate their service. This year I had the pleasure of attending the Second Annual Veterans Day Breakfast at Peabody City Hall as well as Veterans Day ceremonies in Salem and Topsfield. The ceremonies in each community provided fitting tributes to all the brave men and women, past and present, who have worn a United States military uniform.
FEMA Urban Search & Rescue Response System

On November 10th I met with Gerry Giunta, Salem Deputy Fire Chief and Massachusetts Task Force 1 Leader, in Beverly and learned more about the FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Response system. Massachusetts Task Force 1 has supported state and local officials during past emergencies through a variety of ways including search and rescue efforts and specialized emergency medical care.
Salem State University's Careers in Public Service Panel

Recently I participated in a Salem State University Panel focusing on careers in public service and public policy. The panel included Salem Mayor Kimberley Driscoll, Danvers Director of Human Resources Stephen Delaney, and Salem YMCA Executive Director and Beverly City Councilor Jason Silva. The panel gave students an opportunity to hear about how each panelist began their careers in public service and the paths each one of us took to arrive at our current positions. Thank you to Salem State University for inviting me to speak about my role as a state Senator and my experiences in the Massachusetts Legislature!
Tour of the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Salem
On November 18th I visited the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Salem and received this amazing thank you card. Thank you for the great tour!
Danvers Senior CharlieCard Day

On November 17th, Representative Ted Speliotis and I hosted a Senior CharlieCard Day at the Danvers Council on Aging. Over 75 seniors participated in the program, which allowed seniors to apply for a reduced fare CharlieCard without having to travel to the CharlieCard Store in downtown Boston. From time to time, my office will host Senior CharlieCard Days to make it easier for seniors in our area to take advantage of this reduced fare program for public transportation. If you or someone you know may be interested in this program, feel free to contact my office and my staff and I will update you on the next Senior CharlieCard Day. Details for scheduled Senior CharlieCard Days will also be posted in the upcoming events section of future email updates.
Beverly and Salem Park & Land Grants
On November 25th at Winter Island in Salem, Energy and Environmental Affairs (EEA) Secretary Maeve Bartlett announced grants to the City of Beverly and the City of Salem through the Parkland Acquisitions and Renovations for Communities (PARC) Program. According to EEA, the PARC program aims to aid cities and towns in acquiring and developing parks and outdoor recreation areas.

In Beverly, a $400,000 PARC grant will help the city acquire Camp Paradise, an 11.8 acre parcel of land that the city will use for outdoor activities such as biking and hiking. In Salem, a $192,404 PARC grant will allow for the creation of the Winter Island Scenic Trail, which will include new signage, an improved boat launch area, and added greenery.
It is great to see EEA's commitment to investing in parks and open spaces on the North Shore!
North Shore Chamber of Commerce Meeting

On November 12th the North Shore Chamber of Commerce hosted Marty Jones, President and CEO at MassDevelopment. MassDevelopment works with the private and public sectors to help create jobs, improve the state's housing supply, and further develop the Massachusetts economy. At the event, President Jones focused on transforming and investing in Gateway Cities, such as Peabody and Salem, through the recently established Transformative Development Initiative. Since 10 of the Commonwealth's 26 Gateway Cities are located on the North Shore, this initiative has the potential to strengthen our region's economy.
Beverly-Salem "Bridging the Gap" Ceremony

Prior to Thanksgiving I joined Beverly and Salem High Schools for the 31st Annual Bridging the Gap Ceremony. Each year at the ceremony, students from both high schools come together to speak out against violence and damaging school property. Through their cooperation, student leaders and members of both communities have effectively limited the amount of vandalism prior to the annual Beverly-Salem Thanksgiving football game. Congratulations to the event organizers on another successful ceremony, it is great to see so many students participate in the event and be positive role models for both cities!
