Primêre dieregesondheidsorg moet verbeter word
Die Nasionale Opkomende Rooivleisprodusente-organisasie (NERPO) het ‘n beroep op die regering gedoen om die vlakke van primêre dieregesondheidsorg te verbeter en te handhaaf sodat veesiektes voorkom word, produksie verbeter word en kleinskaalse boere in staat gestel word om siektes in ‘n vroeë stadium te identifiseer.
Dié beskrywingspunt is by NERPO se pas afgelope nasionale kongres aanvaar.

Effective water management under the spotlight

Infestation of roundworm declined
With colder temperatures in winter the infestation rate of most roundworm species (especially wireworm) declined in the summer rainfall areas, according to the monthly report on livestock disease trends as informally reported by veterinarians belonging to the Rural Veterinary Association of South Africa.
However reports of infestations, especially in small stock, are still received. In the winter rainfall areas brown stomach-worm infestations are on the increase.

Beef prices should remain strong
Internationally, beef prices are expected to continue to be strong supported by good demand and lower supplies, according to ABSA Agri Trends.
The slaughtering rate in Australia for female cattle is high, which will limit the herd rebuilding capacity and put further support to higher prices. The world demand for meat continues to grow as the middle class in developing countries grows richer.

Mutton prices will move sideways
Internationally, prices will continue to move sideways in the next few weeks because of enough supply in the market which is enough to cover demand, according to ABSA Agri Trends.
A lot of sheep has been slaughtered in Australia as a result of drought, which gives support to the supply side. Demand is expected to increase in the next few weeks, and continue in the months towards Christmas.

The bi-annual Nutrition Congress 2014 took place from 16 to 19 September 2014 at the Birchwood Hotel & Conference Venue in Johannesburg. The 25th Congress of the Nutrition Society of South African and the 13th Congress of the Association of Dietetics in South African brought together nutritionist, dieticians and other health professionals and academia from all corners of South Africa, with the aim to share the most current knowledge on the role of food in human health.
