Week of November 24, 2014 | KC Downtown Streetcar Construction Update

Crossroads Central Business District River Market

Highlights

5th and Grand Track Work
Fifth Street remains closed from Grand Boulevard to just east of Walnut while the KC Streetcar Constructors builds the curved track in the intersection of 5th Street and Grand Boulevard. Read more about the track work on the KC Streetcar website. Anticipated completion is November 26.

Central Business District 
Crews are working 24/7 for approximately 4-5 weeks performing water work near Truman Road North and travel north mid-block between 12th and 13th Streets. 

This Week

CROSSROADS
Pershing to 20th
East side of bridge: Concrete pour 11/22 and restoration week of 11/24
20th to 17th
Water work:
Side-street lane restrictions due to water work:
  • 20th, one lane of eastbound and westbound traffic between Main and Walnut
Anticipated completion of all water work in this segment by 12/1.

Track work:
West side track work wrapping up from 17th to mid-18th St. 
17th St to close Main-Walnut once 16th St reopens.

Systems work:
20th to 17th: Power pole foundation work and traffic signal work. This will mainly affect sidewalks and curb running lanes.
  • 19th St closed to eastbound traffic between Main and Walnut for traffic signal work. Reopen by 11/24.

17th to Truman Road south
Truman Road South at Main St water work to anticipated completion November 26.
Track work ongoing on east side of Main St from Truman Rd South to just south of 17th St. 

Side-street closures due to track and water work:
  • 16th St closed Baltimore to Walnut (16th St closed Baltimore-Main for non-streetcar related work)
  • 17th St to close Main to Walnut once 16th St reopens from Main to Walnut
  • Truman Road south, Baltimore to Main (weekdays only)

CENTRAL BUSINESS DISTRICT
Truman Road north to 12th
Truman Road north through 13th: Various lane closures due to water work. Crews working 24/7. Anticipated completion 12/4.

13th St closed Baltimore to Main.
12th to 10th
10th & Main: Private utility work is now on the southeast corner. 10th, Baltimore to Main, remains one-way eastbound until the private utility work at all four corners of the intersection has been completed. Anticipated completion: December 2014.

Petticoat open to local traffic only. No parking along Petticoat. No semi-trucks. 
10th to 7th
10th & Main: Private utility work is now on the southeast corner. 10th, Baltimore to Main, remains one-way eastbound until the private utility work at all four corners of the intersection has been completed. Anticipated completion: December 2014.

10th & Main is an active work zone. Suggested pedestrian crossing at either 9th St or Petticoat Lane. 

7th & Main: Sewer work. Anticipated completion: mid-November.

Power pole foundation work throughout this segment. Brief impacts to sidewalks and curb-running lanes during this work.
7th to Independence
Delaware Bridge (over I-70): Open to one lane of traffic each direction. 
RIVER MARKET
5th, Delaware to Grand
Track Work:
5th Street closed from Grand Boulevard to just east of Walnut while KC Streetcar Constructors builds the curved track in the intersection of 5th Street and Grand Boulevard.  Anticipated completion 11/26. Crews will work weekends and 12-hour shifts to complete the work.

Grand Blvd, from 5th Street to 3rd Street, will be local access only from 3rd Street. Businesses and parking lots on Grand Boulevard will remain accessible from 3rd Street. 

5th Street from Walnut to Delaware open to two-way traffic and on-street parking.

Water & Sewer work: 
Water work on Walnut St from 5th St. to Missouri. Anticipated completion week of 12/1. 
Sewer lining work 11/24-11/26 in the alley off of Missouri Ave between Grand and Walnut.  Missouri Ave eastbound only 11/24-11/25. While the sewer is being lined, business and residents may notice a chemical-like smell. This is a non-hazardous and non-harmfull smell.  For concerns, call the KCSC team at 816-804-8882.

Grand, 5th to 3rd
Grand Blvd, from 5th Street to 3rd Street, is local access only from 3rd Street. Businesses and parking lots on Grand Boulevard will remain accessible from 3rd Street.  

Crews are completing the curved track at 5th and Grand as well as conduit installation at 4th and Grand. Anticipated completion for both 11/26. 
3rd, Delaware to Grand
Water work anticipated to start week of 12/1 with saw cutting and potholing. 
Delaware, Independence to 3rd
Water work on 4th, Delaware and heading east. Anticipate week of 12/1.

Water work on Delaware between 5th and Independence. One lane of traffic southbound only. No on-street parking on Delaware. 

OCS and traffic signal work on westside of Delaware between 3rd-Independence Street. Anticipate completion 12/4.
Grand to Vehicle Maintenance Facility
Foundation piers are being drilled and concrete is being poured.  Exterior wall construction for the "Singleton Yard" vehicle maintenance facility. Pre-cast concrete wall panels to be delivered to the site in mid-December.
 

 



Private utility work will continue through fall 2014. KC Streetcar Constructors will continue track work in the Crossroads area in fall 2014 as well as through the Power and Light District in December 2014.  
About the Downtown Kansas City Streetcar Starter Line
The two-mile, north-south Downtown KC Streetcar will travel along Main Street and connect the River Market to Crown Center and Union Station, serving the Central Business District, the Crossroads Art District, and the Power and Light District, as well as numerous businesses, restaurants, art galleries, educational facilities and residents.

This weekly construction update provides weekly, at-a-glance information related to the streetcar construction that is taking place this week.  For more information, including upcoming work, check out the project website and follow the streetcar on Twitter (@kcstreetcar) and Facebook. All work activities and time frames are subject to change due to inclement weather or other unforeseen circumstances. 

This update is organized into 12 construction segments, starting at the southern end of the project at Union Station and working north through the River Market.
