Landowners continue to improve forest conditions by purchasing trees through spring, fall tree programs
Tree planting can help protect valuable topsoil among many other benefits; Ausable Bayfield area landowners can purchase trees through fall program until end of September
Landowners in Ausable Bayfield watersheds are taking part in the fall tree order program and doing their part to improve forest conditions. Local residents have started ordering trees through the fall tree program and they can continue to order trees until the end of September. Trees can help preserve valuable topsoil on the land by helping to reduce soil erosion, said Ian Jean, Forestry and Land Stewardship Specialist. “Topsoil can be lost easily and it takes many years to rebuild so it’s a real benefit if landowners can preserve that valued resource,” he said.
Autumn is a good time to plant ball and burlap evergreens and potted deciduous trees, according to Jean. The local conservation authority has two-foot balled and burlap spruce and cedar that are ideal for windbreaks. “These are great for creating windbreaks and shelterbelts on fields and farms,” he said.
