CEO Message

I must have one of the most rewarding jobs in the world. In the past few months, two people have contacted me to say thank you for encouraging them to take a bowel screening test. Their specialists told them they were very lucky to have acted now. It’s an amazing feeling to know that our message is saving lives.

Last week I was fortunate to attend the National EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award Ceremony in Sydney, where I was in the running for the social entrepreneur category. It was an honor to be a part of the event and an incredible opportunity to meet other entrepreneurs from across the country. The social entrepreneur of the year was awarded to Professor Stephen MacMahon of The George Institute for Global Health. A little bit disappointing for us, but a very well deserved award for Professor MacMahon!

If you’re in Adelaide this week, we’d love to see you and your friends at our Ashes BBQ Breakfast. It will be a sensational way to start the weekend. The first four people to
email me and buy tickets to our event will receive a double-pass to the cricket on Sunday, valued at $150. The seats are in the new southern grandstand.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year. If you haven't already done so, please put bowel screening at the top of your New Year's resolution list. This simple test might just save your life.

Ashes BBQ Breakfast

Please join us on Saturday 7th December at St Mark’s College for a BBQ breakfast to kick off day 3 of the Ashes in Adelaide.

Former Australian cricketer Damien 'Flemo' Fleming is our guest speaker for the morning. Damien played in 20 tests and 88 one-day internationals from 1994 to 2001 and was an important part of the all-conquering Australian teams under Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting. He is one of only three players to have taken a hat trick on Test debut.

Our thanks to Beach Energy, St Mark's College, Romeo's Retail Group, Bird In Hand Winery, Coopers and Spartan Electrical for supporting the event. It's going to be FUN!

Raffle prizes include a 47inch LG plasma TV, valued at $1,299 and a 3 litre bottle of Langmeil Winery Barossa Valley Floor 2008 Shiraz worth $250. As well, we will be auctioning a cricket bat signed by both the Australian and English Ashes teams, a bat signed by Rickey Ponting and copy of his recently released autobiography.

Tickets are only $50 each, including BBQ breakfast, beer and bubbles. Purchase tickets

2014 SA Hiking Challenge

The SA Hiking Challenge is a two-day event along South Australia’s famous Heysen Trail.

Next year the Challenge will take place on 23-24 May 2014. We’ll be starting at Cape Jervis, the southern end of the trail, hiking roughly 40km each day. Bus transport will be arranged to and from Victor Harbor each day.

For the mad keen runner, last year's winner set a cracking record of 42.5 kms in just 6 hours, and that's over the ABC Mountain Range! You can tackle it running or hiking – it’s completely up to you. And don’t worry, help will be stationed along the way where you can grab a snack, refill your water bottle and attend to basic first aid needs. If you run out of puff, you can be rescued from these checkpoints.

We do ask that you raise some money to help us continue building awareness about bowel cancer and are grateful for all of your efforts. Be creative with your fundraising and have some fun. We are here to help you as much as we can.

Most importantly, simply by joining our events you are helping. So if you've been thinking about getting involved, please get in touch.
To register, or for more information, email Elissa O'Donohue. A registration fee of $150 will confirm your place in the Challenge.

New York Marathon

Last month, our team of 24 ran the New York Marathon – all in little black tutus. Together, they raised over $137,000 which goes a long way to helping us eliminate bowel cancer in Australia. A special mention to Anna Liptak and the His and Her Time team for their support.

We can't thank everyone enough for throwing themselves into training, organising fundraising events all over the country, and for stepping up to help us raise bowel cancer awareness - TV and newspaper interviews, talking bowel cancer with their friends and even sharing their bowel cancer story for a short film about the importance of early detection. Nothing was too much for them.

If you’re contemplating running a marathon, New York is the one to do. We still have places available for 2014, so please get in touch with Nicole Anderson as soon as possible for registration details. The cut off date for entry is 10 January 2014.
