A joint seminar on TEQs is being held by the All Party Parliamentary Renewable and Sustainable Energy Group (PRASEG) and the All Party Parliamentary Climate Change Group (APPCCG).
Our Managing Director Shaun Chamberlin will be speaking alongside Prof. Michael Grubb and Dr. Tina Fawcett. The event will be chaired by Alan Whitehead MP, and will take place at the House of Commons (Committee Room 17) from 2pm-3:30pm on Tuesday 15th July. Full details here.

New TEQs team member - Dr. Chris Shaw

The ESRC funding bid discussed in our May newsletter was successful! So we're delighted to welcome Chris (pictured above) of Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute to our team for at least the next year.
Chris will be sharing the insights from his 'Climate Crunch' work with us and engaging business, NGOs, policymakers and other stakeholders in wide-ranging discussions of TEQs' potential for breaking the impasse on effective climate policy.

In May Shaun attended the Climate Crunch project's final seminar at the Royal Society, chaired by Sir David King.
It was a fascinating and productive event, with one memorable key finding presented the need for what was termed a "Long, Loud and Legal" framework on emissions. It's a nice phrase, by which they mean:
Long: A clear long-term carbon budget commitment
Loud: Regular reference to this budget by politicians and press
Legal: A firmly legally binding framework
This is of course exactly what TEQs would provide, partially explaining Chris' enthusiasm for joining our team.
Meanwhile, a study of carbon policy from around the world ( published in Global Environmental Change) confirms that policy frameworks to promote low-carbon technologies have proven to be more successful if they are mandatory, allow flexibility in how they are implemented and have clear long-term timeframes...
Across a wide range of research, it is starting to seem that all roads lead to TEQs!

We're a small team working on something we're passionate about with very limited resources, but one that we do have is our great list of supporters.
So we wondered if those of you out there with a burning passion for TEQs would like to get more involved? Or maybe you have a great idea for raising TEQs' profile? Or have contacts with other campaigning organisations (such as Avaaz or 38 Degrees) that could stimulate collaboration?

Three year test of personal carbon trading nears completion
|

Australia’s Southern Cross University is in the final year of a study on Norfolk Island, testing the world’s first personal carbon trading scheme in a ‘closed system’ island environment. This pilot is very different from TEQs, with a particular interest in the personal health benefits (reductions in obesity) associated with reducing carbon footprints, but is nonetheless one that we have advised and are keeping an interested eye on. Their carbon monitoring programme finished last month and they kindly sent us an update as they collect their follow up data.
While we await their overall conclusions with interest, they have recently published an interim paper summarising findings from their baseline survey. They also mentioned that they will soon be producing a commentary on practical difficulties encountered in setting up the system, which could help inform the discussion on pilot implementations of TEQs and similar schemes.

One we missed the other month - an interview with Rob Hopkins, founder of the Transition Towns movement, in which he revealed that if he were made Prime Minister, the first thing he would do would be to introduce TEQs!
