PVS report soon published 

The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF) will publicise the findings of an evaluation on the national Veterinary Services conducted by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) Performance of Veterinary Services evaluation team.

Scientific assessment of predation - number one priority identified

A Scientific Assessment of predation in South Africa is the number one priority of the Predation Management Forum (PMF), it was decided during the last meeting of the forum.
Once the Scientific Assessment has been completed, further needs will be exposed and those are the proposals that will be given to the Department of Environmental Affair’s (DEA) research structure for consideration.

SA Stoetbeeste mag weer na Namibië uitgevoer word

Namibië het die verbod op die invoer van vee uit Suid-Afrika opgehef omdat Suid-Afrika sy bek-en-klouseer vrye status herwin het.
As gevolg van die agterstand in aansoeke, is sewe werksdae nodig om ’n permit te kan uitreik, berig die Republikein. Die Namibië Landbou-unie (NLU) het bekend gemaak dat onderhandelinge oor die invoervereistes van skape, bokke en beeste vir slagdoeleindes steeds aan die gang is.
Telers kan die NLU se webtuiste by www.agrinamibia.com.na besoek vir ’n dokument met die invoervereistes, die aansoekvorms en ander relevante inligting.
Verder word telers daarop gewys dat ’n afskrif van die permit vir die verbetering van vee by die aansoek vir ’n veeartseny-invoerpermit aangeheg moet word.


Internal parasites widespread

Due to late rains that fell in many parts of the country roundworm infestations and especially wire-worm were widespread, according to the monthly report on livestock disease trends as informally reported by veterinarians in South Africa.
Numerous outbreaks led to production losses and mortalities. Lambs were the most susceptible animals. In the feedlots many deaths were reported.

New labelling regulations 

New prescribed labelling regulations are now law.
During October 2013 the Minister of Trade and Industry, Dr Rob Davies, published a notice, in terms of section 24 of the Consumer Protection Act, 68 of 2008 (CPA), prescribing that processed and packaged meat products, as well as dried and packaged meat products, must contain certain prescribed information.

Animal welfare or animal well-being refers to the physical and mental health of animals.  When we talk about animal welfare we are usually referring to how well an animal is adapted to/coping with the environment in which it lives, both physically and emotionally (mentally).

Beef prices expected to move upwards 

Internationally, beef prices in the US are expected to move upwards in the short term with a possible sideways movement in the medium term with prices from New Zealand and Australia that will increase further, according to ABSA Agri Trends. 
Domestic prices are expected to follow the New Zealand prices in the short term and move sideways and upwards in the medium term due to lower supplies.

Internationally, mutton prices should continue to move upward in the short term with a possible sideways movement due to higher demand in international markets.

Challenges facing the Livestock Sector to remain sustainable towards 2050
Grass burning as a common practice in rangeland management will have to be reconsidered in view of its environmental impact. The high variation in abattoir and dairy factory effluent discharge is worrisome, which suggests that bench marks should be set.
