October 2015

Fall in Cleveland is a great time to still be outside. We are organizing two fun events that encourage the entire family to run around, crunch some leaves and PLAY! Details for both are in the Upcoming Events section.

  • NWFN Centennial Trail Scavenger Hunt on Sunday, October 18 from 10 - noon.
We're also excited to announce that our health partner, Neighborhood Family Practice, will be holding a ribbon cutting for their new community health center at W. 117th & Lorain Ave. on Tuesday, October 13 from 5-7pm!

To learn about more events as they are planned, watch our
calendar, subscribe to our Facebook Events (visit our page; click on "More/Events" under our cover photo; then click "subscribe"), and follow us on Twitter to keep up with what we will be doing, or Tweet at us to let us know where you will be! Of course, if there is an event you would like to organize and want some help - let us know!
NWFN Would Like to Help You Understand Your School Choices!
If you are interested in touring some of our near west elementary schools, please take a minute to fill out our survey to find out which schools people are interested in and what your general availability is for visiting.  We are in the initial planning stages, so watch for more information.

In the mean time - two great schools have scheduled opportunities in October for you to visit their schools: Birchwood has an
open house on Sunday, October 18 from 2-4 pm and Near West Intergenerational School has two tours scheduled on Thursday, October 22 (8:45 am and 1:15 pm). More details are in the Upcoming Events section below.
Issue 8 is Up for Renewal in November!
We typically stay out of political issues, but the arts and culture in and around Cleveland are a big part of what many of us love about living in the city. Renewing Issue 8 (a 1.5 cent per cigarette tax) will help ensure continued support for many of the cultural initiatives and organizations we enjoy today (as well as those we may not yet know about!) If you support Issue 8, you can pick up a yard sign from 1961 W. 45th St. You can also learn more about the issue and/or you can find out how you can volunteer at http://voteforissue8.org/volunteer
The Network isn't anything without its members and volunteers....
  • Weather didn't cooperate for our Fishing with Metroparks event in September, but thank you Sarah Rzyner for working to pull it together - we can try again next summer!

If you are interested in helping us make more happen in your neighborhood or if you have an idea for something specific,  please let us know!

Don't let sugar weigh you down

The average American consumes about 130 pounds of sugar in a year.1

The American Heart Association recommends limiting the added sugar in your diet to six teaspoons per day for women and nine teaspoons per day for men.2 That’s about 24 grams of sugar a day for women, and about 36 grams a day for men. Watch out for sugar that’s hiding in sweetened beverages, yogurt, cereals and other processed foods. Even foods you wouldn’t consider sweet may contain loads of added sugars.
