Lower Nehalem Community Trust e-Bulletin

Season’s greetings to all our friends in community conservation!  Please join us this Friday to celebrate the holidays and share in gratitude for all we’ve accomplished together in 2015.
Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together
that overwhelm the world. – Desmond Tutu
December 2015

We keep forgetting to mention there will be door prizes at Friday’s h0liday gathering!  Generous donations from sponsors include tickets to Portland Center Stage, dinner or lunch at the Oregon Culinary Institute, and Nehalem Bay Pottery.  Simply join us to be eligible to win!

Considering a Stock Donation to LNCT?
Here's a terrific way to invest in the legacy of conservation and reduce your 2015 tax bill: a donation to LNCT of stock you acquired at a low cost.  There are several advantages...the capital gains taxes on the shares are avoided; a tax deduction based on the full value of the appreciated stock is created; and LNCT benefits!  It's a winning proposition all around.
The donation is easy with transfers made directly to LNCT's Schwab brokerage account.  Call our Treasurer, Jim Pendergrass (514.915.1502) for stock, mutual fund, and fixed income transfer instructions.  Consult your tax advisor for advice specific to your situation.

STEWARDSHIP NEWS ~ by Max Broderick, Stewardship Coordinator
LNCT's stewardship program is working closely with the Wilson River School's Oregon Youth Conservation Corps
For the last few weeks and through the end of this month the high school students of Wilson River School are working enthusiastically with LNCT land stewards in the field.   They are very engaged in learning about LNCT's conservation work.
We're beginning some of our planting efforts now that the rain is here and the days are shorter.  We'll focus our first planting efforts in the coming year on Zimmerman Marsh and Sorrel Woods before moving onto Cedar Creek in February.

COMMUNITY GARDEN NOTES ~ by Karen Matthews, Community Garden Coordinator
On November 8 we held the last of the school fall field trips.  We hosted 120 kids over the course of three days and had tons of fun learning about the life cycle of plants, their smells, appearances, and textures.  We also learned about some uses of herbs.  We visited the ducks, and inspected soil life up close under a microscope.  Garden volunteers joined in the teaching fun – thank you Randi, Bev, Mary, and Monica!
Fall vegetables and pumpkins are plentiful at the Farm, and the Thanksgiving harvest to benefit the North County Food Bank was bountiful.

Sparrow City) posted on November 3.  In less than two hours, Mike spied 37 bird species.  Visit http://www.surfbirds.com/community-blogs/northcoastdiaries/?p=3029
