JANUARY 2016 ~ HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Big Storm Rocks Our World

While people were scurrying to high ground, stuck in a torrent of tides and flood waters, or blocked in by landslides and failing roads and culverts, nature's indifference to human infrastructure and its ability to thrive in flood events was made perfectly clear. While high waters threatened the Nehalem Teaching Trail's bridge (pictured here), this flooding provided our riparian plantings an abundance of freshwater, as well as salmon passage upriver. And the bridge survived the flood!

Thank You, Donors, for Being So Awesome

Your 2015 gifts have been amazing and inspiring. Thank you! As a nonprofit our work in land conservation, education, and community outreach would be impossible without generous support from champions like you. All of us at the Trust wish you a joyous New Year and send you our gratitude for your partnership in conservation!

Stewardship News

Max Broderick, Stewardship Coordinator

Stewardship work this month has been focused on continuing our planting and invasive species removal efforts at Zimmerman Marsh between the deluges of rains we've been experiencing! We'll continue to establish native plant species at Zimmerman Marsh, Sorrel Woods, Elk Meadows, and Cedar Creek Marsh in the months to come. As soon as January we'll begin collecting willow, twin berry, salmonberry and elderberry cuttings for propagation in our native plant nursery at Alder Creek Farm. We hope you'll join us!

“Rain or Shine” Stewardship Wednesday
Every Wednesday, 10:00 am – noon
Meet at Alder Creek Farm, 35955 Underhill Lane, Nehalem

Community Garden Notes

Karen Matthews, Community Garden Coordinator

Save the date! Our annual plant sale at Alder Creek Farm will be held on Saturday, April 30, from 9:00 am to noon. Starts will be cultivated in our greenhouse so expect robust, acclimatized plants for your garden. We've received feedback that folks would like more growing information on the plastic tags that accompany each flat. A printer with a back feed exit would help us with this project. If Santa brought you a new computer or printer recently, please consider donating your old one to the community garden. Thank you!

In Memoriam

Muchas gracias, George...

"We look back fondly on our memories of George trudging through
the mud at project sites, leading meetings, and
sharing his enthusiasm for restoring the river he cared for so much."
Alix Lee, Lower Nehalem Watershed Council Coordinator

George Hemingway was an incredible leader of Lower Nehalem Watershed Council. Under his leadership the Council developed and implemented critical restoration efforts throughout the Lower Nehalem River watershed. George led the Council through policy and structural changes in 2015 ensuring the future of the Council and retiring knowing he left the organization on strong footing. A lovely tribute was prepared by George's colleague at UC San Diego - Scripps Institution of Oceanography. Read more...

Our hearts go out to Jean and their daughter
Gillian and the Hemingway's extended network of family, friends, and colleagues everywhere. Thank you for your tireless service to our community, George Hemingway! You exemplified in every way what a difference one person can make. Donations honoring George's life may be sent to Lower Nehalem Watershed Council, PO Box 249, Nehalem, OR, 97131.
