Pamela Goldsmith-Jones is a lifetime resident and former mayor of West Vancouver. She was elected in October as the Member of Parliament for West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky Country and has been appointed as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Foreign Affairs.  She is known as a bridge-builder, bringing diverse views together through her inclusive approach to the creation and implementation of public policy.

As mayor, she prioritized conservation in West Vancouver, working on projects such as the reduction of solid waste, and the restoration of the foreshore/inter-tidal zone, for which the city was awarded the Global Green City Award at the United Nations’ Global Forum on Human Settlements. MEMBER PROFILE

Flour Bakery - Horseshoe Bay

Monica Danon-Schaffer, head baker of the Flour Bakery, has been baking since she was a teenager, when she started her baked goods business. Fast forward to a few years ago when she got involved in dog rescue nationally. She decided that in order to raise funds for the cause, it would be helpful to find a sustainable source of funding – which she did selling her knitting and baked goods.

Her husband Boris thought that by formalizing the sale of her baked goods, they could raise even more funds, so the journey to look for a commercial oven began.  They knew the owner of the Flour Bakery in Horseshoe Bay and asked about renting space there only to find that it was for sale.  Their Flour Bakery was born in January 2016.  Because they are both so passionate about saving dogs, they dedicate a minimum of 25% profits to dog rescue organizations.

Drop by the Flour Bakery in Horseshoe Bay and enjoy their opening specials!

Our condolences to family and friends of Piers Hayes.  Piers, owner of the Snug Cafe on Bowen Island, passed away this month. If you visited "The Snug", you no doubt had a chat with Piers who made everyone feel at home.  Piers was a champion of the West Van Chamber and instrumental in Bowen Island businesses joining us.  His enthusiasm and positive energy was contagious - The Snug was one of the first on board for the inaugural "Taste of Bowen". Piers will be dearly missed.

BDC offers free copy of Investment Intentions of Canadian Entrepreneurs Study

Did you know that no less than 76% of Canadian small and medium-sized businesses intend to invest in their business in 2016?  That's just one of the many insightful findings to come out of a recent BDC study, ''Investment Intentions of Canadian Entrepreneurs: An Outlook for 2016''.

Download the BDC’s exclusive study for free and discover your fellow entrepreneurs' investment intentions, including a breakdown by region. A sample of what you'll find in the study:

  • How much Canadian businesses are planning to invest by region
  • Their top investment priorities
  • How investment projects are funded
  • The three main obstacles to investment
  • Economic highlights per region

This BDC survey is the first study of its kind in Canada designed to show what executives of small businesses are planning for investment projects both in terms of the sums of money and the motivations and constraints that are holding them back from investing.

Statistics Canada

Statistics Canada is preparing for the next census which will take place in May 2016 - they will be hiring approximately 35,000 people across the country to assist in the collection of the census. They would like to ensure that Chamber members are aware of these job opportunities.

Completing the census will have a direct impact on gathering the data needed to plan, develop and evaluate relevant programs and services. Census information is important for all communities and is vital for planning services such as schools, daycare, family services, housing, police services, fire protection, roads, public transportation and skills training for employment.
