KC Streetcar Update | April 8, 2016

KC STREETCAR COMMUNITY CELEBRATION | May 6-7, 2016
The KC Streetcar will open to the public on Friday, May 6, 2016.   During the first weekend of May, Kansas City will throw a series of street parties along the streetcar route as residents and visitors celebrate our dynamic downtown in a family-friendly environment.  From Union Station to the River Market, there will be activities, food and fun for everyone and all connected by the KC Streetcar. More details will be posted at www.kcstreetcar.org later this month.
KC STREETCAR SIMULATED SERVICE WHILE IN TEST MODE
As of this week, the KC Streetcar team started simulated streetcar service during this testing phase.  This means that there are three streetcars on the route every day between the hours of 7:00am - 10:00pm. That includes weekends starting with Saturday, April 9.  Passengers will not be able to board during this simulated service but the streetcar will be making stops and opening the doors at each stop.

Please help keep our operators and streetcars safe when they are out training.  Remember to never cross in front of a moving streetcar as a pedestrian or motorist, and never park on the streetcar tracks, even if for a brief moment.  When parking along the streetcar route, make sure the vehicle is entirely within the white painted line.

THE FLEET IS COMPLETE
On Thursday, April 7, Kansas City welcomed home KC Streetcar #804, which made the 1,000 mile trek from Elmira, NY.  The arrival of 804 marks a significant milestone in the progress of the streetcar project.  This now completes the fleet of four streetcar vehicles and gets the team ready for public ridership on May 6.  KC Streetcar 804 will go through testing and work within the Singleton Yard prior to heading out on the route.

The Herzog Transit team is still looking to complete the team of streetcar operators. If you are interested, visit the online application process here, www.kcstreetcar.org
KC STREETCAR TESTING
Recently, the KC Streetcar team performed several essential tests including bicycle loading and wheelchair access. The uniqueness of the KC Streetcar is the level boarding it provides for passengers in the middle section of the streetcar.  This makes it easier for all passengers to quickly and efficiently board the streetcar, whether you are on wheels, using a service dog, or have a visual impairment. The feedback from both tests were incorporated into the KC Streetcar Standard Operating Procedures in order to provide the best ride possible for all of our passengers.

CROSS THE TRACKS AT A 90-DEGREE ANGLE
The KC Streetcar Authority is partnered with BikeWalk KC to promote bicycle safety while riding around a streetcar and streetcar tracks. Through the assistance of an Operation Lifesaver Grant, this partnership is able to spread the word more widely on the importance of being safe while riding near the streetcar tracks and how to load onto a streetcar safely.  The team created a PSA-style bicycle safety video, educational materials, promotional safety items and presentation materials that have been incorporated into BikeWalk KC's Confident City Cycling curriculum.  Learn more about being safe around the KC Streetcar on our website www.kcstreetcar.org
