Don't Hesitate to Get Involved!
Stewardship of LNCT's properties in March included planting native trees and shrubs at Cedar Creek and Elk Meadows as well as facilities maintenance at Vosburg Creek and Alder Creek Farm. April will entail working with students from all over the state ~ join us! The Trust will host over 60 students from St. Mary's School in Medford for a day of gardening and invasive species removal at Alder Creek Farm.
We'll also get area 3rd and 4th graders at Down by the Riverside hosted by Tillamook Estuaries Partnership and led by Dean "Moses" Bones at the Farm. Schoolchildren will get their hands dirty as well by helping us maintain some of our plantings. We look forward to spring to conduct invasive species control, plant maintenance, and monitoring of all our land holdings.

Zimmerman Marsh
Have you taken a walk at Zimmerman Marsh recently? Max and many volunteers have been restoring the marsh to encourage wildlife and a healthy estuarine meadow, wetlands, and riparian ecosystem. Bring your binoculars for early morning bird watching and share your pictures with us!
This small parcel in Wheeler on Highway 101 between 1st and Hemlock Streets has seen the ongoing removal of blackberries and planting of native shrubs. Take a look at the new plantings and a habitat come alive for the spring with healthy rushes, ferns, and leafing alder.
We want to especially express our appreciation to volunteer land stewards Barb Rippey and Barry Marshall for their devoted water carrying throughout last year's dry summer. Without this care-taking the newly planted natives would not have survived. Yet, they are thriving! Thank you, Barb and Barry! To adopt a parcel for watering this summer, contact Max.
Save the Date — Broom Buster in the Parks!
Join Max for a Scotch broom buster work exchange between Elk Meadows Park and Nehalem Bay State Park. Saturday, May 14, at Elk Meadows at the end of Neptune Way in Bayside Gardens, from 10 :00 am - 1:00 pm and Sunday, May 15 at Nehalem Bay State Park. This work party is for all ages ~ grab your friends! Pack some water, a snack, and bring along your work gloves and loppers if you have them.

new fruit trees in the community garden.

Thanks to a generous donation by Northwoods Nursery of Molalla, Oregon (formerly the commercial operation of One Green World), 12 baby fruit trees have been added to the orchard at Alder Creek Farm's community garden. Six of those trees were used to populate a brand-new area recently cleared of invasive European blackberries.
Imagine! More apples, peaches, and the first-ever persimmons growing among our fig trees, crab apples, and 100 year old heirloom apple trees. We are grateful for Northwoods Nursery's generous donation, which allowed us to replace trees we had lost to disease.
Thank you, orchardist Joanne Benningfield and partner Rolf Birchfield, for spearheading this work and directing the orchard team at Alder Creek Farm as the soil was prepared and trees planted in their new home.

Earth Day Hike to Devil's Cauldron
Sunday, April 24, 1:00 pm
Experience the connection between land and sea firsthand during an easy short (.25 miles) hike to the amazing Devil's Cauldron in Oswald West State Park. If you’re up for more, continue on Elk Flats Trail for a 3-mile moderate-to-difficult hike to Short Sands Beach. The Elk Flats Trail, which leads hikers through stunning old growth trees, is steep in some sections and can be muddy this time of year; be prepared to scamper over some sizable fallen trees.
This all-ages hike will be led by Chrissy Smith of Friends of Cape Falcon Marine Reserve and Dale Cramer Burr of Lower Nehalem Community Trust. Learn about the unique story of our coastline, from natural history to ongoing land and ocean conservation, including the new Cape Falcon Marine Reserve.
There are no bathroom or drinking water facilities on this hike. Wear sturdy shoes or boots and bring water or snacks as needed. Meet rain or shine at parking area on west side of Highway 101 at the North Neahkahnie Mountain trailhead. On Google Maps search Elk Flats Trail in Nehalem, Oregon.

Phenology Gather-In at Wanderland
Wanderland Rainforest Sanctuary

Join Gwendolyn Endicott, author, teacher, and storyteller for a spring afternoon in the rainforest with a focus on phenology, the recording of weather patterns and the occurrence of life forms in a particular place through the cycles and seasons and years. Is there a place you love where you frequently walk? Record what is happening there over a period of time, and see how it deepens your understanding and relationship with the earth.
Many of us grieve the loss of the natural landscape around us. When something disappears, we lose the language to describe it. Linguists tell us that is now happening to the vocabulary of nature. This circle will be dedicated to remembering, creating, and using the language of nature; and a way of seeing and experiencing called phenology.

Mission: Training and access to the best tools for microplastic removal year-round for the Manzanita & Neahkahnie communities, and to provide the best filtration tools to a high density microplastic site in Scotland.
Plan: To hold a community training on Neahkahnie Beach with Marc Ward, the leading filtration expert and North Coast native.
Donate: Visit and search Marine Microplastic Cleanup. $1200 is sought for Neahkahnie Beach and $800 for the Firth in Scotland.
