POP UP ART-  PROFILE BUILDING FOR CREATIVES
Week 3 / Unit #3
View this email in your browser

At Pop Up Art we are all about ‘You have to be SEEN to be SOLD’. This premise extends to YOU as an artist, as well as in the exhibition of your work.

Presenting yourself may be challenging, but it will be easier to tackle, when broken down into specific tasks. This program provides a structure to assist you.

It’s a 6-week guide to building a portfolio of credentials that will allow you to maximize new opportunities.

Our focus is not on ‘how to’ – it’s more about making the space and finding the motivation, to tackle an achievable goal. In this sense, we hope to encourage the ‘will to’  just do it.

The finished product will be a marketable snap shot of who you are, where you come from and where you are going.

Profile Building For Creatives encourages you to make the process fun, easy and ideally a celebration of you as an artist.

ARTIST'S STATEMENT

Develop a short written piece about your creative work.

Include details about your practice and any wider intellectual concerns.

Write in a way that invites your audience inside the world of your creative processes and interests. Include information such as the medium you work in and the key themes of your practice.

This is a descriptive and subjective piece of writing – what is your point of view artistically speaking?

Some people are clear on their standpoint as an artists, while others remain in the process of discovery. Either way it is important to articulate your creative objectives.

Ask yourself: What am I trying to achieve with my art? What’s my art about?
Try answering this with ‘free writing’ anything that pops into your head – words, thoughts, phrases, feelings - even if it makes no sense at the onset. Rest your work and then review it. See what you discover.

Consider your influences:
- Are they external? (music, literature, history, politics, environment)
- Or internal (experiences, emotions, dreams, relationships)
Write a back-of-the-envelope list of 20 influences on your work.

Ask a friend: "What do you see as repeated themes in my work?" Take notes about what they say.

As a doodle, mind-map all the themes & materials you have worked with. Then link up themes, formulas, ideas and associations you see on the paper. These links can be a new awareness or a pattern you know to be true.

Be brave: Let yourself go. Put aside fear and modesty that may get in the way of presenting your self and your Art powerfully.

1. Keep a basic artist statement that you can adapt as required for different applications.
2. You can include information such as:
  • concerns/ themes of your practice.
  • what media you choose to work with and why – does it relate in any way to the ideas or themes you work with?
  • influences of your work, both within and outside the arts.
  • is there a common thread to your work that brings all pieces together into your practice.
  • Do you subscribe to any schools of thought or specific theories? What’s their relevance in your work?
3. Take a clear view and avoid grand words when describing your work.
4. Focus on describing your practice, don’t deal with complex philosophical concepts.
5. Compare physical with conceptual qualities of your work.
6. Avoid jargon, be as clear as  possible.

Have a great week everyone. You'll receive your next unit on January 27th! :-)
