| February is Black History Month in the United States and Canada, a time to honor the accomplishments of African Americans and African Canadians throughout history. It also provides an opportunity to reflect on the deeper meaning of this history and enduring challenges around racism and discrimination today. To encourage dialogue on these topics, and engage diverse perspectives, we asked five of our members to pose a question to our larger community on race and civil rights. | Blog: School to Prison Pipeline |
Since the 2014 shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, the subject of excessive force and policing of African Americans, especially youths, has been ever present in communities and schools throughout the United States. In response, the Coalition recently launched From Brown v. Board to Ferguson: Fostering Dialogue on Education, Incarceration and Civil Rights.

On Slavery Past
and Present |
Having secured generous support from the Ford Foundation and the Senegalese Government, the Coalition is pleased to announce it will begin a major three-year revitalization of La Maison des Esclaves in Senegal, which will help the slave house not only tell the story of the transatlantic slave trade, but also serve as a global center for excellence on slavery and its contemporary legacies.

| Enab Baladi on Syria Today |
| According to the United Nations, 4.6 million Syrians have been registered as refugees since 2011. Of them, 2.4 million were under the age of 17. Our member Enab Baladi, a non-profit media organization in Syria, has made coverage of children one of their priorities since its founding in 2011. They recently talked to Syrian girls in refugee camps about their dreams for the future. |
