This was the first year the AMWA student division was represented at the AMA Annual Conference, held on June 8-10th in Chicago, IL. The AMWA AMA Delegate Najah Khan and Alternate Delegate Pooja Yesantharao were both present. AMWA supported the MSS resolutions "Defending Federal Child Nutrition Programs" and "Sexual Assault Survivor's Rights," both of which were adopted by the MSS assembly. Congratulations, Najah and Pooja!

AMWA's Advocacy Committee is currently recruiting members for the AMA Resolution Task Force, a group to discuss creation of policy and resolutions for advocacy. To sign up for the task force please use this link.

National Advocacy Day is currently being organized, a collaboration with the AMWA physician division requiring budget planning as well as coordination of the day's events. If you would like to get involved with AMWA's first National Advocacy Day Committee, please sign up with this link.  If you would like to contribute ideas and help to select the ideas chosen for National Advocacy Day, please do so here.

If you have any questions please contact the National Advocacy Chair at advocacy@amwa-student.org.

The Regional Directors are uniting AMWA's missions of supporting women's health together with supporting women's education through a year long service project for Days for Girls. Many young women around the world are not able to fulfill their potential because they do not have a way to manage their monthly menstrual cycles, Days for Girls is an international non-profit working to change this.

Days for Girls has developed a simple solution by creating kits, crafted and perfected with years of feedback, that dramatically decreases school dropout rates of menstruating girls. These kits contain brightly colored, washable feminine hygiene products that last about 3 years each as well as educational materials. Ranging from germs and handwashing, to preventing violence and human trafficking: each girl is given education about her body, health and safety as well as instructions on how to use the kits. Whether distributed in rural Appalachia, US Prisons, or schools in Sub-Saharan Africa, the educational component can have the most impact.

Each region of AMWA will collaborate to make kits, fundraise, and bring access to feminine hygiene into the spotlight. For more information on this project or information on how you can donate to the cause please contact Kaitlin Parks at region7@amwa-student.org.
Meet one of AMWA's Anne C. Carter Global Health Fellows

Rachel McDiehl

Rachel McDiehl is a fourth year medical student at Emory University School of Medicine and a second year AMWA Anne C. Carter Global Health Fellow. She recently completed a year in Kampala, Uganda where she worked with local and US mentors on a variety of maternal health projects. While in Uganda, she analyzed breastfeeding and infant outcomes in the setting of postpartum long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) implants, explored the relationship between stillbirths and antenatal care, and facilitated the roll-out an SMS based prenatal education curriculum, called SMS Maama. Rachel is looking forward to pursuing a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology following completion of her final year of medical school.
