EVENT HIGHLIGHT:
FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF MEDICINE
ATTENDS COMMUNITY FAMILY FUN DAY

On Saturday June 4th, two second year medical students from FSU College of Medicine, Acton Pifer and Meghan Novotny, along with faculty member Dr. Suzanne Harrison participated in Another Cry Youth Foundation’s "Community Family Fun Day" as a part of their “Save Our Youth from Violence” campaign. On behalf of the FSU Chapter of AMWA, they offered blood pressure screenings, patient education, and counseling about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

The Community Family Fun Day brought out nearly one hundred community members from the Southwest Tallahassee area. The Another Cry Youth Foundation also donated fresh fruits and vegetables to the families that attended.  Additionally, the Foundation led a community forum to discuss topics spanning from HIV/AIDS, human trafficking, and narcotics, to gangs and violence within the community, in an effort to begin a discussion as to how community members can break negative patterns and promote overall wellbeing in the area.

Hildur, Nora, Leandro, and Zuleica walking Canoa streets

AMWA member Alisha Subveri recently had the opportunity to travel to Ecuador for the Ponce Health Sciences University (PHSU) Global Leadership Conference.
Here is a small excerpt that she wrote about her trip:

"This past June, I was able to attend Ponce Health Sciences University Global Leadership Conference in Ecuador after they had recently suffered an earthquake with a moment magnitude of 7.8 on April 16th of this year. PHSU partnered with Ecuador Awaits, an organization founded by Nora Egeberg and Leandro Villacis, with a mission to offer travelers the unique experience of exploring Ecuador, while helping Ecuadorians through volunteer work.  Volunteers are led to where help is most needed, and work with Ecuadorians on innovative and sustainable projects. During our trip, both organizations had a joint purpose to empower the community of Canoa and assist in their community’s reestablishment."

Sanju currently serves as president of her school’s AMWA chapter and previously served two terms as vice president.  As Student Division Region 7 Director, she hopes to be inspired by the vision of female leaders in medicine and to one day inspire future medical students she will come across.
