Dear friend,

Does your family have pets? Many pet owners today consider their household pets as members of their families and they enjoy pampering them. One very important aspect of this is keeping your pets’ needs in mind during the home remodeling process. Keep reading for some tips on making your home comfortable and inviting for your pets.

We had the pleasure of working together with European Landscapes and Design recently on one of their sensational outdoor projects. Take a look at the photos and then consider building an outdoor living space in your backyard!

Hope you’re enjoying your summer. Don’t forget to celebrate National S’mores Day and National Marshmallow Toasting Day this month. That will make your August even more special!

Working Together to Create a Stunning Outdoor Living Space

At T.W. Ellis we enjoy a wonderful working relationship with European Landscapes and Design. Recently, they asked us to work as a subcontractor on one of their outdoor projects. We had the pleasure of constructing the deck for a stunning project designed by the landscaping firm’s talented landscape architect, Juliet Jones.

The goal was to convert this run down outdoor living space into an imaginative, new environment for work and entertaining. Armed with a team of qualified professionals, this backyard transformation was taken to a new level of customization and innovation—and it's gorgeous.

You'll definitely want to read more about this project on our blog.

Work in Progress

As promised in our last issue, here are a few on-site photos of the wonderful kitchen project that our team at T.W. Ellis are busily working on this month. A single family Rosedale home that is part of The Arc Baltimore’s Community Living Division is receiving a much needed two-room renovation that will expand the space into a new larger accessible kitchen for its residents. We are so excited to be involved in this worthy project!

The project is a collaboration between the Home Builders Care Foundation and The Arc Baltimore. Tim is serving as the project’s Volunteer Builder Captain. Read more about this project in The Daily Record and the Baltimore City Biz List.

Make Your Home Pet Friendly

It’s quite obvious these days that pet owners love their pets and consider them valuable members of their family. Household pets usually spend most of their time in the same room as their owner, they often receive birthday and holiday presents, they are professionally groomed and their nails are painted, they are taken to the doctor for regular health check-ups, and they may even go on vacations and stay in pet-friendly hotels with their owners.

Although pet owners do spend a lot of time, energy and money caring for their pets, these animal friends give back in many ways. Pets may vigilantly guard their owners’ homes and serve as attentive guides. They lift their owners’ spirits by their antics, and offer stress-free social interaction and unconditional love.

With this in mind, it makes sense to take your animal friends’ needs and desires into consideration when remodeling your home. You want their environment to keep them healthy and safe, and to make them feel happy and content.

Here is a list of ideas as to how your home could be made more convenient and accessible for your pet.

• Create a comfortable space for each pet—a space that is all their own with a cozy bed, so they won’t search out improper hideaways. Make sure these spaces are free of hazards that could choke or electrocute your pets, such as exposed electrical cords or cords from window blinds.

• Provide your pets easy access to fresh drinking water, such as a built-in pet fountain with faucet. Keep water and food bowls from becoming a tripping hazard for you and other family members.

• Dry food should be protected from light, heat and insects in a food-grade plastic container with lid. Consider storing the food containers in a convenient pull-out shelf in a base cabinet. Leftover wet food must be refrigerated.

• Place litter boxes in a private location, at a distance from the feeding area.

• Store medicines, cleaning supplies, and any potentially dangerous items in locked cabinets. Keep trash in a container with a tight-fitting lid and empty it often so it won’t tempt your four-legged family members.

• Create a pet grooming station for cats or dogs. For smaller animals, raise the height of the sink so you don’t strain your back while bending over. Keep combs and brushes, electric hair clipper, hair dryer, nail clips, toothbrushes and toothpaste, and towels in a handy location, such as a nearby pull-out cabinet organizer. Include a washing machine and dryer as well.

• Provide storage for toys, clothing, collars and leashes.

• Choose easy care finishes for floors and furniture. Luxury vinyl flooring is a durable option that resists scratches and stains. If you prefer wood flooring, select from wood species that are especially hard and therefore more scratch resistant, or consider bamboo. Tile is the most durable material, but can be cold and slippery. Adding radiant underfloor heating and area rugs make a tile floor more cozy for your furry friends.

The Wood-Mode photos shown here are from the company’s concept space called Pet Parlor. It is a dual purpose space that functions as a laundry room while also providing wonderful amenities for pets.
