Home Energy Score Rating System Debuts in North Carolina

The North Carolina Building Performance Association  and the WNC Green Building Council announced a partnership last month to make North Carolina the twenty-first state with access to the Department of Energy's (DOE) Home Energy Score (HES) rating system for existing homes.

The HES rating system helps homeowners understand the value of cost-saving energy efficient improvements for existing homes. The HES rating provides a valuable tool for contractors, energy-efficiency specialists, and owners of existing homes for the first time in North Carolina. The statewide partner for HES is WNCGBC's Green Gauge program.

Specifically, the HES rating applies to existing homes and quantifies current energy usage, identifies simple ways to reduce utility costs at an average of 15 percent, and expands the service options for contractors within the home renovation industry. Moreover, according to the DOE, prospective homebuyers can use HES scores on eligible properties to gain up to an additional two percent in available mortgage funding.
