Spreadwing Damselflies at Alder Creek Farm

This summer I found two species of Lestes (spreadwing damselflies) in Tillamook County that were not previously recorded! Those were Northern Spreadwing (L. disjunctus) and Lyre-tipped Spreadwing (L. unguiculatus). Neither was a surprise.

Recently while checking out the odonate activity at Alder Creek Farm, I found what must be a male Sweetflag Spreadwing (L. forcipatus). Males are extremely similar to male Northern Spreadwing while females are super easy to identify because of their extra large ovipositor (the reverse of what's typical among damselflies). I only found one male, but in-hand examination convinces me that it was a Sweetflag.
No females were found, so the pond at Alder Creek may not be their source. Instead, they might be drifting in from somewhere else. I'm pretty certain another male I photographed at Alder Creek Farm a couple of weeks ago was the same species, but since it wasn't inspected in-hand, I assumed it was a Northern Spreadwing. I now assume it was another Sweetflag.
Previously within Oregon, Sweetflag Spreadwings were only known from sites in the Blue and Wallowa Mountains. I expected to find the species elsewhere across northern Oregon since it gets pretty close in Skamania, Clark, and Wahkiakum counties in Washington. But so far I wasn't able to find it until this find at Alder Creek Farm.

Emerald Necklace Tour with Max Broderick

Meet at the end of Tohl Road in Bayside Gardens, Nehalem
Free event; no preregistration required
Join Lower Nehalem Community Trust's Stewardship Coordinator, Max Broderick, for a tour of LNCT’s conservation lands along Nehalem Bay's scenic north edge. This string of parcels is dubbed the emerald necklace because it has beaded together some amazing natural habitats to protect important wetlands, vistas, green space, and waterways, which are crucial to the well being of all who inhabit this special region—fish, wildlife, and people alike.
The last stop on the tour is Elk Meadows, LNCT’s partnership project with the City of Manzanita. Elk Meadows, a neighborhood nature park, features a winding trail, stands of alder trees, and a sweet wetlands. Also, in the park there is a wooded uplands full of healthy forested habitat perfect for blacktail deer and pileated woodpeckers.
Come learn about how conservation makes a difference, and experience its benefits by enjoying it with Max.
Dogs are not permitted on the tour. All ages are welcome. Bring a pair of binoculars for an up close look at wildlife. Also, wear hiking boots as there may be walking through wet areas. Note that bathroom facilities are not readily available on this tour.
