NCEEA Releases New Energy Code Training Materials and Videos
The North Carolina Energy Efficiency Alliance recently completed a study to identify often-missed requirements of the state's energy code, and followed up with some training materials to help builders improve their homes.
Four years into the new code cycle, they've also released an assessment of compliance rates and common issues.
- Installing fewer than 75 percent high efficacy bulbs: Only 46 percent of homes the NCEEA observed got this right.
- Ducts not sealed very well: Another easy fix if the installer is thoughtful in their work. In all cases the NCEEA observed, sealant was used on the ducts but installed improperly.
- Thermal envelope sealing: Across the board, the backing of kneewalls was poorly done. This paired with dropped soffit sealing are the two culprits in the air-sealing category.
- Insulation installation: The code calls for insulation to be substantially free of gaps, voids and compressions. Again, an easy fix if we follow the manufacturer's instructions.
The training materials, including some great how-to videos, are available at the NCEEA website.
