Thanks to everyone who joined us for our annual member appreciation party Thursday, Aug. 25 at Highland Brewing. The event was a huge success, with a great turnout and thousands of dollars raised for our nonprofit in the silent auction. We're grateful for community support! Credit: Petras Barcas Photos

Don't Miss Out

Just two weeks away!

New Belgium Brewery: Brownfields to Green Infrastructure Workshop and Tour

9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 28
New Belgium Brewery, 21 Craven St., Asheville

New Belgium Brewing Co. recently built a brewery on a Brownfield site on the French Broad River in Asheville. A focus on sustainable development including low impact development has been a guiding force for the redevelopment of the site. During the planning and design phases, emphasis was placed on creating a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certified project and providing design solutions to avoid impacts to natural systems. A partnership between New Belgium Brewery and the City of Asheville fostered a holistic approach to redeveloping the site with sustainable improvements such as multimodal transportation, including a complete streets design approach, stormwater improvements and a greenway in the floodplain.

Presented by Equinox President David Tuch, this workshop and tour will focus on the implementation of the key aspects of this project that make it a model development including stormwater improvements, stream restoration, phytoremediation plantings, and a greenway along the French Broad River. Innovative elements such as “green streets” and the integration of stormwater best management practices such as water quality swales, bioretention areas, and a constructed wetland throughout the site will be presented. This will also include a discussion around the restoration of an urban stream. The design and planning process will be discussed with examples of how the design professionals adapted low impact principles to the challenges of the site.

Cost: $50 for WNCGBC members, $65 for non-members
Class size limit: 28 attendees
AIA and ALSA continuing education credits are available.

NCEEA Releases New Energy Code Training Materials and Videos

The North Carolina Energy Efficiency Alliance recently completed a study to identify often-missed requirements of the state's energy code, and followed up with some training materials to help builders improve their homes.

Four years into the new code cycle, they've also released an assessment of compliance rates and common issues.

  1. Installing fewer than 75 percent high efficacy bulbs: Only 46 percent of homes the NCEEA observed got this right.
  2. Ducts not sealed very well: Another easy fix if the installer is thoughtful in their work. In all cases the NCEEA observed, sealant was used on the ducts but installed improperly.
  3. Thermal envelope sealing: Across the board, the backing of kneewalls was poorly done. This paired with dropped soffit sealing are the two culprits in the air-sealing category.
  4. Insulation installation: The code calls for insulation to be substantially free of gaps, voids and compressions. Again, an easy fix if we follow the manufacturer's instructions.
The training materials, including some great how-to videos, are available at the NCEEA website.
