Meet the Crew:

Dave Chick, Finish Carpenter

T.W. Ellis is excited to welcome Dave Chick to our team of experienced professional craftsmen. Dave is originally from Carroll County, Maryland and he has been working in the construction industry for 30 years. Already in high school he developed a love for construction, which led him to take classes that would prepare him to study architecture in college.

In college he majored in architecture, commercial art and drafting, while minoring in business. Dave soon discovered that the new computer technology radically changed the way architects work. He enjoyed using pens and pencils to make creative sketches by hand. It was a slower method, but he appreciated the meticulous hands-on work it required. The CAD drawing programs left him cold.

Home Builders Care Foundation Collaborates with The Arc Baltimore

The Kitchen is Moving Right Along

The Home Builders Care Foundation and The Arc Baltimore’s collaborative kitchen project is in full swing. It’s exciting to see the new functional layout taking shape. Soon this single family Rosedale home that is a part of The Arc Baltimore’s Community Living Division will provide its residents with a new larger accessible kitchen!

T. W. Ellis’ finish carpenter, Dave Chick, provided his expertise in laying the beautiful new floor tile and installing the cabinets. We are all just so pleased to be assisting with this worthwhile project.

Guild Quality review:

“Barry and his team did a fantastic job! He worked with us up front on design options, was clear with the cost related to the options and kept us up to date with the schedule for the work. We ended up with an amazing outdoor living space; we couldn’t be happier!"

Your Man Cave

A man cave is a room or a space used as a retreat by the man of the house—a place that is designed and equipped according to his personal taste. In this relaxed environment he can work on his hobbies, enjoy favorite leisure activities and hang out with his male friends in the absence of female surveillance. It gives guys the freedom to express themselves.

Your man cave could be located in a variety of places inside or outside your home. This decision depends on the layout of your home, the needs your family has for the available space, and the activities that will take place in your man cave. The basement, attic, garage or a secluded outdoor location are all possibilities.

So, what would you like to do in your man cave: shoot billiards, throw darts, watch sports on TV, play cards? Or are you more into working on a hobby, strumming your guitar, or watching a favorite movie?

If you like to work on cars for fun, it is pretty obvious you should set up your special manly retreat in the garage. It can become that place where you also get together with friends to talk about cars and watch NASCAR races. Begin converting your garage to a man cave by clearing out all those miscellaneous items, such as rusty garden tools and broken kids toys, that you no longer use.

If you want the garage to be a welcoming space year-round, consider adding insulation, especially if yours is a detached garage. Install a ductless mini-split unit for climate control, along with ceiling fans for added circulation. Interlocking, rubberized tile placed over a concrete slab floor provide cushioning for your feet while shooting pool. Be sure to include a bathroom in your man cave, with both a toilet and a urinal.

Comfortable seating is essential in a man cave. Large recliners with footrests and cup holders will be very popular among your guy friends. Including a sectional sofa and padded bar stools will provide enough seating for larger groups. Leather or soft vinyl upholstery offer easy maintenance.

For serious fun, set up a fully stocked bar with a sink, liquor cabinet, kegerator, beverage refrigerator and microwave. That way you will not need to run to your kitchen every time you want something to eat or drink.

Consider everything you will want for media. Do you want several flat screen TVs lining the wall so you can capture every single sports game all at the same time? How about a gaming console? Do you want dimmable, ambient theater-style lighting along with general lighting?

Darker paint colors like deep oranges, browns, grays, blacks and other neutrals create a masculine vibe. Furniture and wall coverings made from wood, stone, brick and metal reinforce that masculine feel. Against this backdrop, you have the opportunity to display all your prized possessions, such as sports memorabilia, trophies, collectables, movie posters and more.

Chances are, if you make your man cave this inviting, your family will beg to spend time there with you as well! And there is nothing wrong with sharing your man cave once in a while with those special people.
