Advancing Racial Equity Workshop: The Role of Government

Monday, November 14th 8:30 to 5:00 PM CST

Historically, government played a role in the creation and maintenance of racial inequities. For us to realize our shared aspiration of racial justice, it is necessary for government to focus on the impacts of historical and current policies and practices. This workshop will explore the role, challenges, responsibilities and opportunities for government to advance racial equity in the Twin Cities. We will include an overview of shared terminology, including racial equity and inequity, implicit and explicit bias, and individual, institutional and structural racism. We’ll strategize about how power and privilege impact racial inequity. We will introduce a racial equity tool that can be used in decisions relating to policies, practices, programs and budget.

Within our cities and counties, we must normalize racial equity as a key value, operationalize racial equity via new policies and institutional practice, and organize, both internally and in partnership with other institutions and the community. You will learn about a growing body of effective practices.

The workshop is Monday, November 14 from 8:30 to 5 in downtown Saint Paul. Workshop cost for members of the Government Alliance on Race and Equity ($25) and non-members ($125). Register today, space is limited.
