Dear friend,

We’re in that time of year again when your kitchen gets a real workout. When friends and family gather at your house for holiday parties, you’ll want your kitchen to be both beautiful and functional. Here are some ideas for designing a gorgeous kitchen that is so organized, it makes cooking a breeze.

The two projects we entered into the annual MBIA awards contest both won the Award of Excellence this year! Congratulations and thanks to our clients and construction partners for allowing us the privilege of working together with you on these awesome projects.

Remembering special people at Christmas fills our hearts with joy. We wish you and all those close to you a wonderful holiday season and a New Year filled with peace and happiness.

HBCF Kitchen Project Completed!

Here’s the news we’ve all been waiting for: our collaborative kitchen project we’ve been highlighting during the past few months is finished and the residents have moved back in!

An Open House celebrated the renovation—which included the complete transformation of a kitchen and dining room so they are accessible to the three individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who live in the home. This is the first house to be renovated as part of a new partnership between The Arc Baltimore and the Home Builders Care Foundation (HBCF) of Maryland.

“We are so impressed by the generosity and quality craftsmanship of the member companies in the Home Builders Care Foundation that participated in this renovation,” says Stephen H. Morgan, Executive Director of The Arc Baltimore. “They transformed this home and made it truly accessible to the people who live there for the daily tasks of cooking and cleaning and doing laundry—things most of us take for granted.”

The total value of the renovation was nearly $56,000! HBCF member companies providing in-kind contributions included: T.W. Ellis; John H Myers & Son; Cosentino North America; Conestoga Tile; Smart Energy Systems; Garrison Plumbing; The Rachuba Group; Bob Ward Companies; Humpty Dumpsters; and SBL Electric.

Tim Ellis, Builder Captain and a member of HBCF’s board of directors, notes, “At T.W. Ellis, we are fortunate and blessed, and we are truly thankful for that. It allows us the privilege of working on projects like this for a great organization like The Arc Baltimore.”

Beautiful and Functional Kitchens

Whenever you dream about remodeling your kitchen and the kind of updates you would like to make, what comes immediately to mind? Most people begin with cabinets, imagining the style and finish that appeals to them the most. Maybe you picture timeless white cabinets, beautiful granite countertops, and a subway tile backsplash. Or perhaps you envision a sleek modern look with flat-panel cabinets and thin slab countertops. Obviously, the decorative materials and colors you choose for your kitchen are going to make a big difference in your enjoyment of the space.

There is another factor leading to an even deeper appreciation of your kitchen space, and that is based on how it functions when you are preparing meals or entertaining. For instance, do all the contents of your cabinets come to you instead of you having to hunt around on your hands and knees for certain items? Do your cabinet drawers provide easy ways to keep the contents neatly organized instead of having to pile items haphazardly on top of each other? Are all areas of your kitchen—including food preparation areas and the insides of cabinets, drawers and pantries—brightly and completely illuminated? Once your kitchen is newly remodeled you want to be able to answer these questions and many more with a resounding Yes! So as you are planning your kitchen, think about function.

Pantry pull-out

You can study the Häfele kitchen pictured here for inspiration, making note of its storage, innovation, and imagination. It proves that beauty and function can coexist along with your pots, pans and wooden spoons. Consider which of the various types of organizational systems you would like to use in optimizing your new kitchen.

Full-extension pantry pull-outs will give you easy access to the contents of multiple shelves all at the same time. Cabinet doors that lift up instead of out conserve space in your kitchen and avoid bumping into other open cabinet doors. An in-cabinet pull down unit makes the contents of your upper cabinets easily reachable. A backsplash railing system can handle everything from spices to cookbooks and utensils, providing a convenient storage location.

Kitchen drawer organizational systems help keep the contents of your drawers in order. A drawer that is fitted with a series of modular trays, dividers, boxes and baskets provides space for a wide variety of items. Non-slip mats prevent the contents from sliding as you open and close the drawer. And then, the final masterful touch is to bring everything to life with LED lighting, including in-cabinet, in-drawer and over the countertop fixtures.

A smartly organized kitchen helps increase productivity as you are preparing meals. It also assists you in quickly clearing clutter off your countertops before guests arrive, making your kitchen party-ready in a flash.
