VDBR Welcomes New Team Members

ROBBIE GRIFFIN

After lots of searching for the perfect project manager, Vision Design welcomes Robbie Griffin to our team.

He was born and raised in North Carolina right here in the Catawba Valley. As a teenager Robbie was able to work with his uncle in the summer months while school was out to apprentice in the construction industry. His uncle was a local framing contractor and was able to mentor Robbie. Robbie says, “I was amazed at how the local lumberyard would drop off a pile of wood and in a few weeks there would be a new home standing there.” He still loves to watch projects unfold and make someone’s dreams a reality. Continue reading on our blog.

ERIC MITCHELL

While interviewing for our new project manager, Robbie Griffin, he mentioned that a co-worker would also make a great asset. We would like to introduce our new carpenter, Eric Mitchell.

In his youth in North Carolina Eric was raised on a tobacco farm. He learned that hard work was an everyday aspect. He helped his family maintain and repair farm buildings/sheds. He started taking construction classes in high school to further his knowledge of the trade. He was active in 4-H club and even took mission trips with his church to repair homes. He loved to see the smile on people’s faces after a completed job—a notable trait that is still with him today. He also attended an electrical engineering program at a local college. Keep Reading on our blog.

4 Years Strong as Builder of the Year!

In December of 2016, I was awarded Builder of the Year by the Caldwell County Home Builder's Association. The votes come in from a group of industry related peers that serve with the association. I am proud to have been the recipient for the past 4 years! I also received a plaque for serving the association for the past 3 years as president.

I love to give back to industry that helps me provide for my family and all families that we work with. Remember that the housing industry is one of the only ones that keep the money local. We use our clients’ money to pay local trade contractors, material suppliers, and their families. Remodeling and construction is very beneficial to the community. If you love what you do everyday, is it really a job?

Lighting Makes a Difference

From the dramatic play of accent lighting on the ceiling to simple under cabinet task lighting—your enjoyment and comfort level in your kitchen will be greatly affected by lighting. As you consider updating your kitchen, don’t let lighting be an afterthought. Today’s kitchen is a multifaceted area that often includes an island with seating, a dining table, and a beverage bar—in addition to the food preparation and cooking space. Each area has a different purpose, and its lighting should be carefully selected to help support that purpose.

Ambient

Ambient lighting, which is general and even room illumination, helps you move about the kitchen safely without stumbling into various objects, like a wayward bar stool that could be obscured in the shadows. During the daytime, natural, broad-spectrum light from windows helps provide ambient lighting and adds an element of warmth and cheer to your kitchen. Artificial ambient light often begins with several recessed ceiling lights installed in prime spots around the perimeter of the room. Include dimming options with your ceiling lights so you can also create a romantic atmosphere for special occasions. Decorative pendants that glow softly work well over an island that is used more for social gatherings than for serious cooking.

Task

Task lighting, on the other hand, brightly illuminates countertops when you prepare food or drawer interiors while you search for the right utensil. LED strip lights under cabinets and decorative pendants that aim light downward over an island or dining table can provide excellent task lighting in their respective areas.

Accent

Accent lighting creates visual interest by emphasizing unusual details in your kitchen, such as art collections or architectural features like beams, tray ceilings or cove moldings. These three — Ambient, Task, and Accent work together in layers to provide an effective lighting scheme for your entire kitchen.

A couple other aspects to keep in mind: Dark cabinets or dark walls will absorb the light, so you will need a larger quantity of lights than if your walls are white or light colored. Also, rooms with high ceilings will need more lighting than the same size room with lower ceilings.

Decorative lighting fixtures can be used to add a real eye-catching splash of color and style to your kitchen. Consider the design and finish of your kitchen cabinets, hardware and furniture when selecting decorative fixtures so they complement each other. Everything does not have to match, but you want to create a pleasant and cohesive atmosphere.

Many homeowners today are switching over to LED lights from incandescent since the bulbs consume less electricity, last longer and run cooler, among many other advantages. But there is a certain amount of confusion about which LED bulbs to choose. In the past, light bulbs were normally purchased based on wattage, which is the amount of energy a bulb uses. You knew by heart that a 100-watt incandescent bulb would look brighter than a 25-watt bulb. Since LED lightbulbs use less energy to produce the same amount of light as an incandescent bulb, you need to purchase your light bulbs based on a different measurement. With LED you need to think in terms of lumens, which measure the actual brightness of a lightbulb.
