Dear <<First name>>,

We send our monthly e-newsletter, iCare, to keep you informed of news about family carers and let you know highlights of our work supporting young and adult carers. There's been a lot in the press about adult social care of relevance to carers.

Do let us know if you no longer want to receive iCare. You can unsubscribe at the bottom of this page. Even better, tell us what you’d like included to stay subscribed.

Please forward this e-newsletter to any colleagues who might be interested and they can sign-up to receive iCare themselves on our website.

Yours sincerely,

Helen Brown

Parent Care

There’s lots in this edition of iCare, but lets start with the most recent: a film on BBC Inside Out about Sue Marchant’s diaries of a working family carer building a personalised care package for her mum, Elinor. Sue found it really difficult to do but also very rewarding and the film highlighted the range of costs she found. Elinor was happy with her home carers and benefited from care made personal to her.

The Junior Health Minister, David Mowat, believes families should care for elderly parents just as we do for our children. However, few families lifestyles are prepared for this. Carers Trust’s third phase of the Speak up for Older Carers Campaign launches on 7th February: Retirement on hold and planning for future needs. Keep a look out for this and we will feature highlights in the next iCare.

Starting 2017 on a high note - 98% of clients we support would recommend us

We are delighted to start the new year on a high - by announcing the outstanding results of our annual Customer Service survey which said that 98% of people we support with care in their homes in Cambridgeshire, Peterborough and Norfolk feel the care they receive helps them maintain their quality of life and 98% of cared-for clients would recommend us to family and friends.

Our care staff were commended for listening to clients, treating the cared-for person with dignity, compassion, kindness and respect, as well as treating the cared-for as an individual and respecting their circumstances.  This is the quality of service we always strive to achieve.

"The carers have all been very capable and flexible. They are very caring individuals."

Young Carers Awareness Day 2017

YCAD 2017 saw the first Young Carers in Education Conference and a half-day workshop.
  • 70 people attended
  • Young carers aged 9 to 18 attended the sessions as well as professionals from schools, a university, Norfolk Constabulary, early help and virtually all of the Young Carers Providers from the partnership.
  • 8 Forum young carers helped with the running of the events and delivery of the sessions
  • On the question of “Did you appreciate the conference?” on the evaluation form, the average score was 9.6/10
  • On the question of “Did it meet your expectations?” the average score was 9.3/10.
On the back of the two events:
  • Norfolk Primary/Secondary Headteachers Association and the Norfolk Heads of Sixth Form/FE colleges group want to talk about our work and the Young Carer Friendly Tick Award. A staff member from a cluster school is also wanting to secure us an invitation to their cluster meeting.
Here are some quotes/feedback from the two events:

“It was brilliant. Great to have input from young carer perspective. Thank you for a wonderful day.”

“Danielle was very inspirational and it was interesting to find out about the awards.”

New Carer's Hub Launched in Ramsey

We launched a new Carers Hub in Ramsey this month, with more planned for later this year. We had the official opening on 16 January by the Mayor of Ramsey, Cllr Adela Costello, and were joined by carers, their families and healthcare professionals.

The Hub is a joint collaboration with Care Network, Age UK, Parkinson’s UK, Alzheimer’s Society, Ramsey Neighbourhood Trust and Ramsey Library.  It will support carers and the people they care for by providing a wide range of help and information, as well as training to promote the mental and physical health of carers and their families.

Carers Hubs also provides a vital opportunity for family carers to have a break as there is space for them to meet separately for coffee and a chat.

The group will meet on the third Monday of the month at Ramsey Library.

For more information contact Carers Trust Cambridgeshire on 01480 499090 or email us.

Top Ten Ranking for CPFT’s Support of Carers

Congratulations to Cambridgeshire and Peterborough NHS Foundation Trust for being ranked one of the top ten community NHS Trusts in England for supporting family carers.

CPFT signed up to the Triangle of Care in 2015 which was  set up by Carers Trust nationally and the National Mental Health Development Unit to strengthen the involvement of carers and families in care planning, treatment and support.

CPFT has been awarded two gold stars for completing the first for two stages for self-assessing its mental health inpatient and crisis teams, and then committing to improve.  The second is for completing self-assessments for its community mental health services.

We believe there is strong evidence that this approach, which improves links between healthcare professionals, the carer and service user, strengthens the quality of care, has a positive impact on recovery and improves the well-being of the carer.

Carers Trust signs letter to Prime Minister calling for solution to social healthcare crisis

Carers Trust is one of 75 organisations that this month signed an open letter to Prime Minister Theresa May calling for a long-term solution to the current crisis in health and social care funding that has support from all parties.

https://carers.org/news-item/carers-trust-sign-open-letter-pm-calling-cross-party-process-health-and-social-care

The letter warns that “2017 cannot be another year where the huge issues are ducked,” and that unless bold action is taken now, “millions of older, ill and disabled peopled people and their carers will continue to be let down.”

I firmly endorse those views and hope this year will be the time when our pleas are listened to and acted on.  We particularly need to support our growing numbers of older carers, with a massive 81% of those questioned by Carers Trust for their Speak Up for Older Carers campaign https://carers.org/speakup saying they felt isolated and lonely.  Did you realise that almost 1 in 10 people over 85 provide unpaid care - a figure set to double over the next 20 years?  We are here to speak up for our older carers during this important ongoing campaign.  Please do let others know about it.

The letter to the Prime Minister can be downloaded here.

New Support Group for Working Carers

Peterborough carers in employment who juggle looking after a loved one can now be supported by a new group being launched in the city.

Our Working Carers Group will be run bi-monthly on Saturday mornings at Thorpe Hall to offer information and support that carer givers are unable to access during the week.

The first group will meet on Saturday 11 February, and then regularly throughout the year.  See our website for further information.

Seven day access to GP services in Peterborough

Patients registered at all GP practices across Greater Peterborough can book appointments seven days a week.

An extra 12,000 GP practice appointments have been offered since last September, made possible by extended health services which have just been secured for at least another year.

As a result appointments can be made as late as 8:30pm Monday-Friday, as well as on Saturday and Sunday mornings.

To book an appointment, patients simply need to phone their own practice as they would do normally and they will be advised which appointments are available and where. Patients may be asked to attend a practice other than their own, but the health professional will still have full access to their health records.

Did you know we provide Day Care in Fulbourn, March and King's Lynn?

I was not sure about going to the day group I use before I went but the staff are so kind, friendly, and nice to me.  I enjoy it now I go there. It gives my husband a break and a rest.

Our Day Centre in Fulbourn meets twice weekly for people living in south Cambridgeshire.

Our Fenland Day Centre meets twice a week in March for people with care needs in the Fenland area.

The Emmerich Day Centre in King’s Lynn meets every Tuesday for people with care needs.
