KC Streetcar Update | January  2017

STREETCAR IS A WIN FOR BUSINESS

According to a recent survey of small businesses located on the streetcar route, business is good and many are seeing an uptick in both revenue numbers and foot traffic.

In a unique partnership, the City of Kansas City’s Biz Care Office, the Downtown Council and the Streetcar Authority conducted a survey of small businesses located directly on the streetcar route. Forty-one small businesses participated in the survey with a sampling from each district along the streetcar route. Businesses ranged from restaurants, retail shops, bars & pubs, and coffee shops.  The Small Business survey results can be found on the KC Streetcar website http://kcstreetcar.org/business/.

“Much attention has been paid to new development along the streetcar route,” said Tom Gerend, executive director of the Kansas City Streetcar Authority.  “This was an effort to better understand the impact of streetcar operations on existing businesses, many who have been with us since before construction,” continued Gerend.
RIDER INFO

The KC Streetcar team aims to be transparent and consistent when communicating with our riders. Most streetcar and service related information is communicated through the streetcar social media sites in order to get information out as quickly as possible.

Now, in addition to Twitter and Facebook, riders can read the daily service updates on the Streetcar website (
http://kcstreetcar.org/text-alerts/) as well as sign up for receive text alerts.  The text alert system helps notify passengers when there are major disruptions or changes to streetcar service.

Signing up is easy: Just text “KCSTREETCAR” to 797979.  KC Streetcar Text Alerts will only be sent when there are significant changes to streetcar service and operations due to:
  • Major service disruptions
  • Schedule alerts related to holidays, severe weather or major special events
  • Unforeseen Circumstances
These Text Alerts will not contain text messages related to general streetcar information, events or news.
DOWNTOWN DEVELOPMENT

Downtown Kansas City is back in the game...and in a big way.  Since 2012, there has been more than $1.8 billion in investment downtown and within a few blocks of the KC Streetcar line. The development includes the large and small and everything in between. It's bringing people downtown to live, work, dine and be entertained and all within a short distance of the KC Streetcar.

The Downtown Council recently published a 2017 Downtown KC Streetcar Development map, showcasing all the development under construction and planned around the streetcar line.

What does this mean for KC Streetcar ridership? With a projected 32.4% near-term increase in residential density, we are looking at more streetcar riders, more downtown activity and more economic impact.
