First Bear River Excursion a Success

On July 29th, beginner birders gathered at the Bear River Campground Day-Use area for a morning stroll along the cool waters of the river. Expert birder and president of the Sierra Foothills Audubon Society, Rudy Darling led the excursion, teaching guests how to identify birds by their distinct calls.

Although late in the birding season, we were able to identify a number of birds including: wren, turkey vulture, oak titmouse, morning dove, raven, downy woodpecker, bush tits, yellow warbler, quail and a flock of lesser goldfinch. Thank you to Rudy and everyone who join us for this walk.

Sad you missed it? Not to worry, we have another Bear River Excursion August 28th from 6:30-8pm.  SYRCL's own River Science Project Manager Betsy Harbert will lead our walk as we identify native plants in the Bear River canyon.  To join, RSVP to Daniel Belshe, Community Engagement Manager at daniel@yubariver.org or call 530-265-5961 ext 201.

BEAUTY OF THE BEAR
Become a Citizen Scientist and report on iNaturalist!
  • What: Sierra Streams Institute (SSI) and SYRCL are partnering to report all the incredible flora and fauna our communities enjoy along the Bear River. Click here to become a member of the project and report what you see. The iNaturalist platform lets you add descriptions, pictures and see what other Bear River lovers have observed.
  • When: Anytime, but sign up NOW to get started! Over 60 species have already been observed.
  • Why: This project allows us to track all the incredible wildlife in the Bear River Watershed that would be flooded by Centennial Dam.
Special thanks to SSI for this incredible project, we are so excited that there are such talented and incredible organizations working on the Bear - and look forward to more partnerships in the future.
We need YOU!
