Covid-19 Update

Last week, Governor Inslee extended Washington's stay-at-home order through May 31st and released a four phase plan for reopening the state.

Like many of you, KCD staff have been working and struggling through the uncertainty of this time.

Our main office has been closed to the public for over a month, and many KCD services including soil testing, equipment rental, and site visits are still on hold until we feel confident that we have solutions that meet local and national guidelines, and ensure the safety of KCD staff and our cooperators.

KCD staff are still hard at work on projects that can be done remotely. We are coordinating with Farm King County partners to develop and communicate opportunities to our agricultural community. Staff have also been developing online content to continue to inform and educate about conservation efforts across King County.

Currently, we are developing protocols around our services to ensure that we can get back in the field as quickly and safely as possible.

We encourage you to reach out through our main line (425) 282-1900 or directly to staff that you are already working with.

We are all navigating uncertain terrain, but remember, you don't have to go it alone, your local conservation district is here to help.

Agricultural Update

KCD joins King County, WSDA, and other regional partners to coordinate and leverage our efforts to support local farmers and ensure food access in this challenging time. We are working with our partners to identify ways we can combine efforts to develop tools that strengthen our food system's resiliency in the face of the current crisis and beyond into the future.

Cooperator Spotlight: Trish Borden and Lee Valenta

Trish and Lee are no strangers to planting trees and stewarding their land. They’ve been planting Douglas fir, Western red cedar, alder, and other species on their property for the past 25 years. More recently, they partnered with KCD in 2019 to do a streamside enhancement project through KCD’s Urban Riparian Habitat Stewardship Program and Landowner Incentive Program. The project resulted in removal of invasive weeds, such as yellow flag iris and Himalayan blackberry, and planting of nearly 700 native trees and shrubs along their reach of Bowman Creek.

Support Your Local Farms, Get Outside and Visit a Farmstand

It’s that time of year when the earth is warming, and waking up, and most of us are looking to get outside and stretch our legs. Instead, Covid-19 and Governor Inslee’s stay-at-home order have kept most of us cooped up inside.

You can responsibly practice social distancing, support your local producers, and get out of your house by heading over to your local farm stand.
