A bit more information about the origin of this workbook:
With uncertainty the one sure thing in our lives right now, we take comfort in the fact that nonprofit organizations are experts in the unknown. As a sector, nonprofits provide stability where it’s lacking, whether for safety, shelter, food, physical and mental health, jobs, or educational opportunities—the list goes on. Because of limited resources, nonprofits must also conduct their work with a great deal of innovation. With these native conditions of nonprofit work in mind, is there any better resource during the current COVID-19 pandemic than nonprofit expertise? We don’t think so. Now, more than ever, we need mission-driven thinkers and innovators like YOU undaunted by reduced financial circumstances.

Despite the omnipresence of COVID-19, we cannot forget that as “Charitable nonprofit organizations [we] hold [donors] assets for the benefit of the public and stewardship over such assets by the organization is essentially a public service…." We are reminded of our fiduciary responsibility by Susan Staricka who spent most of her legal career in the role of “Regulator,” for the nonprofit sector overseeing the charge of the Texas Office of the Attorney General to protect the public interest in charity. Susan also served as Section Chief and Senior Attorney over Charitable Trusts in both the Consumer Protection Division and the Financial Litigation and Charitable Trusts Division of the Office, in addition to four years of service to the Texas Attorneys General where she oversaw teams of investigators and assistant attorneys general.

Susan shares her insights and the top ten mistakes that nonprofit boards must avoid in fulfilling their fiduciary responsibilities to the public whom we all serve in her GUIDANCE FOR NONPROFIT BOARD SERVICE: Fiduciary Duties and Mistakes to Avoid. You can download your free copy of this resource below.

Your participation and kind comments encourage us to continue offering online learning opportunities and pragmatic resources that address the human and professional dimensions of these uncertain times. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us if you have suggestions on what more we can do to be of help.

Last week, the Building Movement Project and Solidarity Is hosted a webinar on the disproportionate effects of COVID-19 on vulnerable communities. Host Deepa Iyer spoke with four women of color movement leaders about the challenges that nonprofit organizations, from social service providers to movement-based groups, are facing during the Coronavirus pandemic.

If you missed this insightful conversation, we highly encourage you to view the recently made available conversation which explored the impact of COVID-19 around various communities in the United States as well as the effects on organizational staff, its programs, in addition to discussion on the possibilities for the future.
