Race and Trafficking

A strong nexus exists between both sex and labor trafficking and race. It is our responsibility to continuously educate ourselves and other healthcare professionals about this topic in order to best serve our patients. Anyone can become a victim of trafficking, but research illustrates that people of color show a high vulnerability. 

At AMWA PATH, we support the Black Lives Matter movement; we are committed to fostering a culture of inclusivity and promotion of diversity, acknowledging systemic racism and its effects on human trafficking, and prioritizing the recognition of the overarching societal factors that lead to marginalization of people based on race and skin color. We stand unified to support our BIPOC patients and clinicians in pursuit of a more equitable future (in healthcare).

About the Newsletter

This is a monthly series in research and advocacy news summaries created by the PATH residents and medical students. Newsletters will feature recent scholarly publications and policy changes, as well as highlight PATH member efforts and upcoming events.

Committee Updates

The Research Committee is led by Emily Anderson and Sneha Aidasani, with monthly meetings as the students familiarize with the body of literature pertaining to human trafficking. They’re also researching human trafficking knowledge among physicians- keep an eye out for a survey in our next newsletter.

The Education Committee, led by Rachel Anderson, is currently working with PATH physician chair Dr. Vala to create short educational videos on labor trafficking. 

The Advocacy Committee, led by Alison Neely, is working to create infographics on racial disparities both in human trafficking and in prosecution of prostitution as well as comiling a guide with state-by-state local resources for human trafficking victims and survivors. 

The Fundraising Committee is hosting a virtual 5K on November 8th. Click to join the race or purchase an AMWA PATH shirt. If you're interested in supporting PATH, you can join their team or Donate Online. 

The Public Relations Committee is led by Rubaya Yeahia and Nicole Segaline, and includes management of the group's recently developed Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram platforms. The group hopes to further develop PATH's social media platform by expanding to LinkedIn this upcoming month.

Stay Informed

A recent publication by researcher Catherine Worsnop shows that trafficking increases by 31% amidst a pandemic. Student Spotlight

Jen Talbott is a fourth year medical student at Mayo Clinic Arizona and a first year MPH student at Columbia University. She joined PATH last year as a way to network with other likeminded students across the country. She is interested in human trafficking research and education for healthcare professionals.
