Every time we recount a story, we bring a bit of ourselves into it. Every time we recount a story, we remember those from whom we’ve heard their stories. Every time we tell a story we forge a tale to be told–about who we are, what our experiences and differences are, and how we deal with the weight and active force of histories and memories. Each account, no matter how incomplete, exhaustive, rich or truthful, has its own rhythm, noise, and pace. This week’s newsletter centers around the stories that breathe life and joy into our artistic practices–from home, at home, and far away.

As part of our series on music and emancipation, Samira Dainan takes us on a personal and lyrical journey through Morocco and parts of the Sahara. The Power of Moroccan Roots Music is a thrilling collection of memories and music told by a person in search of her history and her voice, with each account of every audio excerpt radiating love and care. This episode is “an ode to the musicians of the Maghreb,” by a musician who with her rigorous craft has revitalized the histories and tales of Amazigh, Arabic, African, and Sufi music, away from the Eurocentric gaze.

Online Exhibition Living Matter
“What is storytelling, or better yet, what does storytelling do?” In this collection of stories, AKI Enschede students share their contributions to the artistic research project Living Matters. Their work explores ecological and alchemistic questions such as: “How to pay attention to the plant root system?,” as asked by Suzan Stemerdink, or, “How can we bring the past and future life?,” as asked by Rojin Tavassoli. How can we create in the time of ecological disasters? The complexity of these questions were compounded by the onset of the Coronavirus and its resulting impact on ongoing crises, such as climate breakdown, and economic and racial injustice.
See the online exhibition and read Agnieszka Anna Wołodźko’s retelling.
