Thought-force

Don’t let your mind control you. Begin to control it by staying away from any thought that will disturb the mind. Selfish thoughts pave the way for anxiety, fear, and disappointments. Remember: the greatest power on earth is thought-force. Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti.”    ~Swami Satchidananda

Yoga Brings Us Back to Nature
By Swami Satchidananda

We all want to become healthy, both mentally and physically, but somehow there are a lot of toxins in our bodies and minds. The more we clean the mind, the more we bring out the true light within. I can compare what happens in the oil industry to what happens within us as we clean ourselves. The ground is drilled and from that comes a very crude oil. When the crude oil is processed in the refineries, you have gasoline. It’s not that anything super has been put into the crude oil, instead they simply refine the crude oil and that same oil expresses its true capacity as pure gasoline.  MORE

As human beings we all have the potential to be happy and compassionate people, and we also have the potential to be miserable and harmful to others. The potential for all these things is present within each of us.If we want to be happy, then the important thing is to try to promote the positive and useful aspects in each of us and to try to reduce the negative. Doing negative things, such as stealing and lying, may occasionally seem to bring some short-term satisfaction, but in the long term they will always bring us misery.  MORE

Avi Gordon (Integral Yoga Teachers Association director) and Maziz Jamal Mahgoub (founder of holisticunderground.org) discuss various aspects of social justice and how we all have the potential to be happy and compassionate people, and we also have the potential to be miserable and harmful to others. With inner strength we have less fear and more self-confidence, and it becomes much easier to extend our sense of caring to others without any barriers. Watch

Hatha Teaching of the Month: Sthira Sukham Asana
By Kali Morse, E-RYT 500, RPYT, C-IAYT and Rashmi Galliano, E-RYT 500, RPYT

In The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Book II: sutra 46, Sri Patanjali describes asana as having two components: sthira—steady, sukham—comfortable. Swami Satchidananda’s commentary on this sutra tells us that “We need the strength of steel, but with steel’s flexibility.” How might one experience the idea expressed in this analogy? Often in the Sanskrit language words have multiple meanings. Sthira’s meaning can be explored from a foundational approach to mean “stability.” It requires strength to be stable.  MORE

From the Executive Director: We are so grateful for all of the love and support many of you have shared with the Ashram and your continued dedication to the yogic path. Since the Ashram’s closure over three months ago, we have moved programs online, reduced expenses, and secured temporary government assistance. Still, we anticipate a large fiscal deficit due to the extended closure. Funding is urgently needed to help preserve the Ashram through this time...  MORE

In a surprise announcement last weekend (a Guru Poornima blessing!), Dominion and Duke energy companies abruptly cancelled their plan to build the 600 mile Atlantic Coast Pipeline, which was regarded as a major threat to Yogaville’s pristine environment and the safety of its residents. Thank you to all who led the tireless protest against the pipeline these past 6 years. Learn more about the cancellation here and read more about those who led the inspiring and heroic activism here. The Washington Post also highlighted the ashram in their article.
