Soon after 9/11, a large Yoga conference was being held in the USA. The organizers asked Swami Satchidananda to send a message of comfort and inspiration...
I am very happy to see that Yoga is more and more appreciated and embraced by people of all faiths and in all walks of life. Now, more than ever we need to have a steady mind, a calm and clean mind, and a loving and compassionate heart. So many people are in pain, so many have lost loved ones, and so many are overcome with fear. That is all true and we have to feel compassion and lovingkindness toward everyone. Yet, if we only look at the adversities, we will be consumed with sorrow, fear, and despair. But that will not help during these times. MORE

The connection that is most meaningful and healing for us does not take place online but in the spiritual Self. Here, we can rest in a place that is unchanging and free, where we know no separation, and where natural compassion springs forward unbidden from the heart. The intention of all spiritual practice is to quiet all of these limiting beliefs and habitual thought patterns that imprison us, restricting our ability to feel love and compassion beyond those close to us. This is the time for love. Time for bodhisattvas. In Buddhist teachings, the bodhisattva is someone who vows to alleviate suffering and bring blessings in every circumstance. A bodhisattva chooses to live with dignity and courage and radiates compassion for all, no matter where they find themselves. This is not a metaphor. As bodhisattvas, we are now asked to hold a certain measure of the tragedy of the world and respond with love. The bodhisattva path is in front of us. MORE

Since 1893, a stately parade of Swamis, Gurus, and Yoga masters have journeyed from India to grace the shores of the United States. They have irrevocably changed the spiritual landscape. Regardless of our own path or tradition, we’ve all been influenced by them to one degree or another, often in ways we’re not even aware of. Now, in this e-course, Phil Goldberg turns to six legendary teachers, including Swami Satchidananda, to dramatically enhance our spiritual growth. Register here.

Happy Birthday 91st Birthday Mataji! On April 1st (no joke!) our beloved Mataji (Swami Gurucharanananda Ma) turned 91. The usual ashram celebrations had to be curtailed due to the pandemic, but the monks in the monastery still found a way to celebrate Mataji—whom Swami Satchidananda called "The mother of the Ashram." And, we celebrate her too! Jai Mataji!
